COLUMBIA, S.C.
A Baptist church in South Carolina says it will give the hand-carved statue of Jesus Christ that the congregation deemed too Catholic to another church.
The 7-foot (2-meter) statue and accompanying reliefs depicting scenes from Christ's life have been displayed outside Red Bank Baptist Church in Lexington for a decade.
But the Rev. Jeff Wright wouldn't tell The Associated Press when the statue will be taken down.
Wright says church members meant no harm in the decision, and the attention has turned a church issue unfairly into a social justice issue.
Furman University religion professor David Fink says he doesn't see any features on the statue that made it appear Catholic.
However, he says it resembles the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, whose population is majority Roman Catholic.

Non-news. Baptists aren’t into the iconography of Christianity as Catholics are.
When we sold our old Catholic elementary school to the Baptists, we removed all the statues ourselves, knowing they had no use for them.

I was raised Baptist. There is an image of Christ in literally every Baptist church I've ever attended.

This is what happens when there’s no Starbucks cup to whine about.

I’m an Anti-Baptist.
I don’t even like Exit 35.

Every Baptist i've ever encountered or been around had no issues with Catholics. I had family members (catholics) marry Baptists, and no issues at all.
Except Baptists from the LP, seems like they are a whole another kind out there.

Yes, but the dude’s point still stands. Catholic churches may have more than 1 image of Christ. Will have Christ on the cross, and multiple images of Mary and or Saints. Batists don’t do all that. Hence they aren’t into inconography like us “Papists”.

Step outside of Louisiana where Catholicism isn't as big a part of the culture.

Same here but I’ve known some baptists (and Methodists) that don’t consider Catholics to be Christians.

I agree with that view, but that begs the question. Why did they get a statue of Jesus if they aren't into icons?
