The amount of people that drown off the beaches here is staggering. It has to be 3 or 4 dozen or more a year

I haven’t seen a green flag in years. The water last time I was down was barely a wave and clearer than pool water and still yellow flag.

Screw that. I just go sit down where the waves are finishing washing up and open the flood gates. A few waves and you'll be fully clean. Most likely.

The key is to start peeing before you’re waste deep. Maybe around knee deep. Then let the waves clean you up. Hell I’ve started peeing before my toes hit the water. How would they know?

It sounds cruel and heartless, but if you get sucked up by the ocean you're on your own unless someone in a boat comes to your rescue. Way too many great people die trying to save idiots who should've never been in the water anyway.

They always stress the importance of the buddy system in Scuba classes, more often than not a mishap results in two dead divers instead of one. The rule among the people I dived with was once we hit the water you were on your own.

My long time buddy was good friends with him at Calhoun County where they worked together as deputies. Regretfully I broke the news to him yesterday when I asked if he knew him, he proceeded to send me pictures of them together.

I am a 20 year Police vet. I personally didn't know this Officer, but this news makes all of us stop in our tracks. All officers after hearing of a officer death are saddened and then follow that with thoughts of how they could have died on specific calls.

Tragic and unfortunately part of our job. We help those who in some cases wouldn't piss on us if we were on fire.

Another rescue was required today out in Ft. Morgan after a swimmer got into trouble. Other people in the beach got him out and started CPR before he was taken to the hospital. Red flags are flying in Gulf Shores and there is a high risk of rip currents along the central Gulf Coast today.

Wouldn't surprise me if there are more this week with this current weather system that's locked in over the region. Just saw there's a rip tide advisory all the way through tomorrow night. Sucks for the vacationers.

We're getting pummeled with heavy tropical rain in Birmingham this week, and the air is super steamy when it's not raining. Absolute worst kind of weather. I'd rather deal with the cold than this.

Agreed. I used to go way out where I had to tread water. The older I get, the closer I stay to shore. Like you, I barely get beyond waist deep anymore. And I’m taking no chances on a red flag.

SIAP

One of the links had a link to this story by the young man who went into the water ? after Mr. Smith was out there. It descibes the rip current and how he barely survived and Mr. Smith didn't.

Buchanan Ct is at MM 2 right before you get to the Indies and The Dunes where Mr Smith passed away. It’s not far from Tacky Jacks Ft Morgan.

Maybe it is just a rumor I have heard...If you don't pay your property taxes, firefighters will watch your home burn LINK

But, I mean, if you want to put your life in danger because you are just stupid, why should someone else save you? (In the case of swimming under sever conditions)

Never go rescue someone without some sort of board or flotation device. A drowning person will drown your arse trying to save themselves.

Even then it might not be enough. Tough to say but you probably are better off letting someone drown than going in after them unless it is an immediate family member

Just make sure Phil Collins isn’t around to write a terrible song about you.
