Having someone who only sings in Spanish do the halftime show is a valid criticism, but from a marketing stand point it was a fantastic move by the NFL.

I think this is my only gripe. I know a bunch of his songs because I have a Hispanic wife and can speak/understand some Spanish. That's not true for a lot of the country. You're going to have a lot of people who can't search or tell you the lyrics to the song even if they enjoyed the show.

That said, Cardi B has an arena tour starting next year and she had a really big hit with Bad Bunny a few years ago. I bet they bring her out to do that one so there's at least some English being spoken (even if it's by someone as illiterate as Cardi B)

He is all in on his Puerto Rican heritage currently, I think if he has a guest it may be someone like The Marias who are blowing up currently, have PR ties, have a song together, and sing in English half the time.

I remember when he appeared as Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G character during the Shakira and Jennifer Lopez halftime show in 2020.

I said he was in the "rap/hip hop orbit" which he is.

That's a nebulous term, doesn't really mean anything.

quote:

Don't get your feelings hurt over your favorite artist. He tours with a rapper as an opening act currently (Playboi Carti), and has previously toured with Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar. He's had collabs with over a dozen rappers. To say he's not in that realm is dishonest. Sure, he's not purely a rap or hip hop act. But he courts that audience heavily.

It's not about feelings, it's about accuracy. The Weeknd has done collaborations and features with a bunch of artists from many different genres. To describe him as being in the "rap/hiphop orbit" leaves out all the projects he's done with a wide range of styles. You say he's "not purely a rap or hip hop act." I'll quibble with that, too, because he's not a rapper or a hip/hop act in any fashion. He's purely a singer.
Mike Dean and Playboi Carti opened most of this leg of the After Hours 'Til Dawn tour. The two Metlife shows I went to was them. Way back in the beginning of this tour it was Mike Dean and Kaytranada after Doja Cat dropped out.

The NFL had 72 of the 100 most-watched US broadcasts in 2024...

This is why they picked Bad Bunny over someone like Morgan Wallen.

Because even after all the Kaepernick kneeling and BLM pandering, their core fanbase - white, American men - never left.

So the NFL knows they can dismiss them and go cater to the global market ($), with more games in Europe and LatAm, and anti-American halftime shows.

No matter who they announce some will be upset and some will be happy. Imagine the backlash nationally if THEY DID pick someone mentioned itt.

They should have just ended the Super Bowl halftime show after Prince. That was the peak. Now people mostly just tune in for trainwrecks instead of loving the artists

If the NFL had just kept this formula everyone would be happy.

Prince and Bruno Mars were also very good performances. Problem is not because performer is black or hispanic, but the crappy and broken urban and now gay culture the NFL has defaulted to choosing to represent those cultures.

Rap industry is made up of a small group of elites getting rich pushing cultures that keep the masses of those cultures down and ignorant by glorifying brokenness (also racism & violence with some) instead of pushing improvement.

Lol what. The poliboard was melting because Jlo had a Puerto Rican flag in addition to an American flag.

“Melting” is always the term used here about the PB. It means nothing at this point. The urkraine thread constantly exaggerated what was posted there as I could never see the same amount extremes or melts when I checked for myself. Yet all the regular Ukraine thread posters kept going on with their posts stating how absolute every post or poster was.

Anyway I wasn’t a fan of the Puerto Rican flag issue and likely posted that here on the OT’s thread that night, and yet I still posted what I did.

Quit being so divisive. People can dislike her raising of the PR on equal footing as the US flag (and dislike her as a person and she is awful) and still want to see more of the actual performance that night especially Shakira or something in the exact same ballpark of that performance.

Right. That board has also watered down the term in case you haven't noticed. They also exaggerate how liberal the OT is. Meh.

Your exact words were "everyone would be happy." What's your complaint? My pointing out the obvious--that you can't please everyone? Or did you see the poliboard invoked and get your feewings hurt?

Times have changed people. Talent doesn't matter. It's draw. Doesn't even matter if they watch football. If he has that many streams they gonna put him in. Same with the overseas games and they have social media influencers announcing stuff and doing commercials..
