Im sorry, I just assumed he would have played an instrument or sang in a song that is completely accredited to him

When I think DJ, I think sounds and no vocals

So is he actually a producer as well?

It’s more like a composer. A guy like John Williams isn’t playing the instruments, but the song is completely accredited to him.

Sub the orchestra for a computer program and they aren’t really that different. You still need to understand the basics of music theory and composition.

Who the frick do you guys think makes these songs before these guys just “go press buttons on stage”?

No idea. The shite I hear in clubs is drivel to me from DJs. It is a mash up of electronic sounds. Wake me up and Levels are true composed songs that I like

I understand folks disagree

What’s the thinking behind why Arkancide happened to this guy?

As another lad said, he was starting to go negative on the pedophilia and human trafficking associated with the entertainment industry.

He died in Oman. Another Clinton connection is that a person involved in investigations with the Clinton Foundation trafficking children from Haiti died in Oman. If he was publicly negative on human trafficking and pedophiles he should have known better than to go to a middle east country.

You in the club often?

I mean you don’t have to like any certain genre, but outside of shitty cookie cutter pop and pop country music, most of it takes skill. Even the shitty pop country has guys writing the music who have a basic understanding of musical composition even if it is formulaic and generic as hell.

You can’t just mash up sounds and have a song anyone will like. Even those songs you think suck probably have proper structure and are well made if not appealing to everyone.

I don't think anyone debates who actually makes them, but I personally question their "shows"...where they're basically hitting play on their songs, done to light shows.

If I'm going to a "concert" I tend to want to hear the music performed. But clearly a bunch of people like the button pushing performances.

Um, the post I replied to was asking that very thing...

That’s fair, but you don’t have to go to something if you don’t want to. Like your last sentence implies, if someone else considers it fun, they can go.

Wow! You must be quite the musician to call out fellow OTers about music theory and composition while defending a DJ. Not just a DJ, but a musician, composer, orchestra director, producer, engineer, headphone wearin', gang-sign flippin button pusher. Well done! I now need to revisit my 40+ years of musical training and concentrate on pushin a button. ( DJ chops for the ignorant)

You may not have liked him, but I think it’s universally accepted that Avicii was a cut above the rest.

I bet you've heard Levels though.

Hadn't heard it... but gave it a spin. Not bad at all, for the genre. But I'm not a fan of the genre. But I used to listen to that when out at clubs in Moscow, London, Tokyo etc., 10-18 years ago.

Then I listened to the other one, with the pretty brunette and the horse. I liked that tune a bit better.

Avicci was obviously good at what he did... but it is a style that is 'meh' to me. But I hope he rests in peace, and his family is comforted to know he is considered by many to be the best in his field, and that he has/had legions of fans.

What does that feel like? My side hurts during the day after a few days of drinking too much. Then goes away after a day off.
