normally send an oil sample off at 15k
I don’t know what you pay for that, but if you’re doing it at 15k, it seems to me that it wouldn’t be worth it. For instance, no matter what the reading said, I wouldn’t go over 20k, so if I’m about to change the oil anyway, I’d just get it done at 15k every time instead of ‘send off to test’ at 15k in hopes that I can stretch it to 20K.
That’s just me though, not saying your wrong.
So two opinions here, one saying flush tranny other saying just change fluid. Coming up on 110k with neither, should I flush or just change? Any other opinions?

I work for a lubricants company so I get samples at cost, which is about 5 bucks.

Unbiased mechanics will tell you not to flush. Transmission oil is rated to last way longer than that. Too many stories about transmission problems after a flush for me to take the risk.
Just too many shady mechanic shops out there that do it wrong.

So you are saying to just change the trans fluid, not flush? Or not change fluid at all?

Synthetic is good for like 8k miles
FWIW, Subaru requires synthetic, and their maintenance schedule is 7500 / 7 months.

Change oil and filter every 6,000 miles using full synthetic. I also add 1 ounce of seafoam per quart of oil to my crankcase about 300 miles before I change the oil.
That's a waste of time and money. Synthetic oils have enough detergency alone to clean varnish and deposits. If you want to clean the engine, use a high grade synthetic or mixed-fleet HDEO. I use Delo XSP 5W-40 in my work vehicle.

quote:personally, this is a bad idea. Synthetic oil may not wear out but if the everday person simply follows this on just any vehicle (the OP's case is a 10 year old car with 190K miles) and doesn't even bother to check it, the vehicle will burn oil and get low. Yes, a low oil light may come on but i don't agree with just letting it get to that point and wouldn't want to take the risk if it doesn't come on.
synthetic oil needs changing every 15k miles but the oil change places recommend changing it at 8k to make money off of you when in fact its only at its half life at that point.

Changing it is okay or topping it off but I don’t think it’s as necessary to change it as they make you think.

I trust the vehicle's own monitoring system completely. It is miles better than any arbitrary mileage/timespan interval system, because it takes those into account already in addition to your driving habits. It knows how hard you drive, the temp, etc. Hell it might even measure particulates and moisture in the oil.
The only thing I trust more than the on-board computer is actually looking at the oil.
I spent 30 years consulting to dealer service departments. In that time there was always this topic. I had many occasions working with OEM engineering types and when those reminder lights came into use I always made a point of asking what they thought of them.
To a person they said heel no they would not wait that long! The consensus was, like mine, is that is a marketing ploy and the biggest damage being done is the notion is that you just drive it and never check anything. Every engine has to burn a little oil. It gets coated on the cylinder walls and the rings are not 100% effective of removing it all of nor do you want it to be.
So may vehicles are driven with low oil levels between oil changes that causes a lot of problems such as higher oil temperature that promoted faster oil break down.
LOF and rotate tires every 5K and check the brakes. Air filter every 30K. Trans service every 50K. Semi synthetic works fine like this Good to go.

Are you concerned about your car or about the oil company's bottom line? That 3k miles or 3 months is about the bottom line.

It’s really important also to replace your windshield every 3,000 miles.

Good mechanics will tell you to do a fluid change every 30k-50k, especially in full-size trucks and SUVs. Transmission oils do not last as long as they used to, Mercon LV has a considerably shorter actual service life than Mercon V but Ford still says it's good for 100K (it's not). I bought a B&M deep sump transmission pan for my F150 the last time I changed the fluid. I didn't have that option for my other vehicle so I ordered a new pan and welded in a drain plug. If you want to get the most life out of a slush box then you keep the fluid topped off for the additive package and install the biggest auxiliary cooler you can fit.

What does your owners manual recommend?
That’s what you should follow.

I live about a mile and a half from my job and could literally go 6-12 months without driving more than 3,000 miles.
That's part of the issue- you are making short drives, engines need to be exercised. Synthetic is the way to go, but even with low miles, I would not wait a year to change oil, especially if you drive in a lot of stop and go traffic...

Yeah, every hour of idle time = 50 miles as a rule of thumb
It adds up

There are a ton of variables like engine type, performance, load, etc. My interval is 9,000 miles or 1 year, but it's a new car running full synthetic. If I take my car to the track I change it sooner.
