re: Auto Advice Needed: Oil Change

Model and year of car?
As several have said, full synthetic is good for at least 7500 and probably 6 months. HOWEVER, that can also depend on the condition of your engine.
In any case, you should be checking the oil preferably at least monthly. If the oil is still lightly colored and you aren't "losing" oil, the above advice is good. If the oil is black and thick and/or you are losing volume, you need to react accordingly. Besides needing someone to evaluate the problem causing the burning or loss, you need to change it more often.
Personally, I'd stay away from Jiffy Lube.

Seriously? How much does an oil change cost you?
You've probably spent more going out to dinner, and that's gone in less than 30 minutes...

No, just make sure you check it regularly in case it gets low or you have a leak. Dont want that going unnoticed.
You can go 6K on regular oil with no issues.

I live about a mile and a half from my job and could literally go 6-12 months without driving more than 3,000 miles.

Wife's new car calls for every 10k miles.
I change mine every 10yrs whether it needs it or not (2012 Sequoia)

Synthetic is good for at least 5K, and my rule is I change it twice a year if I'm not over 10K miles.

FIL is a mechanic
He tells me conventional oil should go no more than 5 months / 5,000 miles, and synthetic no more than 10 months / 10,000 miles, ON AVERAGE.
If all you do is simple country road driving, you could probably go more. If you do a lot of hard interstate BR traffic miles, might get dirty faster.
Dirty oil is TERRIBLE for an engine. I'd rather pay a little more and change my oil more often, then risk the problems that a dirty engine can bring.

While this is a good point, this is the kind of stuff I hate overpaying for. Full synthetic is at least a $60 oil change, twice a year for 4-5 years. That's probably $300 I could have saved if I only had it changed it once a year.

The old 3k or 3 months is about 15 years old at this point and probably even a hoax then.
I wouldn't say it's a "hoax" but it's a loss leader for many places to get you in the door to try to upsell you other services that may be a hoax.

With the 2.5L 4 in that thing... you can go 6-7K without an issue, esp with synthetic. Depending on mileage, though, always check the dipstick and top off when it gets low. My old man had a 2010 Fusion with the same motor and changed it every 7K.
Any shop is going to recommend you come in much sooner than the manufacturer's actual recommended interval. Ignore the stupid sticker they put on your windshield.
Oh and the every 6 months line is horseshite. Oil doesn't degrade that much over that timespan. You'd only have to worry about a timeframe if you have a leak somewhere.

Engines and oils are so much better these days that 3k mile oil changes are overkill. I think I good interval is 5k to 7500 or 6 months

Your oil is never getting hot enough to burn off the fuel that bypasses your rings, or that gets routed back to to crankcase from the pcv valve.

Read your owner’s manual.

After I had my car for about 10 years I quit caring. I’d go around 8-10,000 miles with reg oil.

3k miles originally was correct when motor oils were first standardized. We're talking mid-20th century, though. The product then was MUCH more variable and dirty than today's product. The 3k mile thing was never really changed because it still ensures the vehicle is protected if you follow that replacement schedule and, hey, it sells more motor oil.
Motor oil, though, doesn't have a stopwatch on it where it instantly goes bad when it hits some arbitrary number (unless that number is temperature and you cook it off, but then your motor's probably borked already). It degrades over time and can last a LONG time if your engine isn't putting a lot of stress on the oil and it's maintained and monitored. My car monitors the oil and it rolled 15k miles before the car's computer asked for an oil change.
So, no, those intervals aren't real. They're a lowest common denominator sort of thing. If you follow the published oil change intervals, it's almost impossible to have oil-related engine problems (assuming you have oil) because you're basically changing out good oil and filters. Each engine will require oil changes at some point to avoid damage based on how you drive it and how the oil degrades, but your engine won't instantly seize if you go over some arbitrary number.

If you are changing Synthetic oil every 3000 miles I’ll take your “old oil”.

FYI - it's full synthetic
My car suggests changing every 19K miles with full synthetic
As frugal as I might want to be I don't trust that so usually do it about every 7000 miles or so

You want oil that's been in someone's car for a year? Lol
It not the mileage that is degrading his oil. It's the harsh environment it's being used in. Imagine the moisture that oil has been exposed to and not getting hot enough to burn off in a year. Lol

I've been about 15K since I've changed mine. I've had to add a quart or 2 in that timeframe because my Sierra consumes oil. Last time I checked I was still good, but I'm probably going to get it done this weekend, primarily because I want to an induction cleaning. I drive back and forth from Baton Rouge to Hammond 5 or 6 days a week so most of my travel is I12 without much traffic.
