A couple months ago there was a week long water boil advisory because they couldn't handle all of the rain we received in a short period. For 3 days now, our water has smelled of rotten seafood thanks to zebra mussels that have grown on an intake pipe. They definitely have some problems that need to be addressed especially with the strain the growing population is putting on the infrastructure.

source: my parents who grew up in NOLA during the 60s. They left NOLA in 1979
Know why they left? Oilfield opportunities that were not in NOLA.

I don't dislike Nola but it was far better in the 60s-80s.

You wouldn’t want Nola to grow economically and have a shite ton jobs come to the city with all the positives that brings?
I don’t think having more people and New suburbs popping up would change the uniqueness of the garden district, French quarter etc etc.

The only difference is in Austin they’re hippie looking homeless people and in Nola they’re just ghetto looking homesless people.

Austin was okay on my 2nd visit. My first...nope. The water levels were so low that wells near Lake Travis were deemed unsafe for drinking. Since the heavy rains a few years ago, things are fine now, but that drought was devastating. On my most recent visit, the traffic was undeal. It is a cool place to visit but I would not want to live there. I would much rather live in actual hill country. As for Nola, discounting the effects of Katrina is moronic. I'm surprised it has recovered as well as it has. As for being a tourist destination, it really isn't a comparison. Austin is not a top tier global destination for tourists imho. New Orleans, in spite of its well documented issues, still is.
TLDR - both are great to visit but not to live in.
And...frick the Cali democrats.

Not to the level of Houston, Austin, etc. I mean it when I say I like the small town vibe. Im not sure how much time you spend here but we do see a small amount of growth. The city is better than it ever has been and I think that will continue.

Changes the uniqueness of the people though. Austin, Nashville... no one is from those places any more. Just a bunch of transplants that all came for a job. Those cities have changed drastically in the last 10 years. What was once special has been replaced with watered down clean cut corporate version. To some it’s a good change but I’d rather it not happen here.

Meh, we can probably split hairs all day on this. I bet there were quite a few stabbings and such that were not reported back in the day as well as some gun play. There were always projects near Bourbon St.
We could also discuss how many neighborhoods are much safer and going through a lot of gentrification since Katrina.
If you were go go back in time to say the 90's and visit the Irish Channel, Ferret St. the Bywater, and some other areas I can't think of the proper name of, and compare to now, it would blow your minds.
