And I am cycling through a weird series of emotions. Annoyed, furious, vengeful, but mostly sad. This is a multi billion dollar company. A household name. An icon of American ingenuity. And they have sunk to this. It's hard to process.

So the short of it is this:

The WiFi suddenly stops working at our farm. Dad calls AT&T. They bounce him around for the normal hour or so talking to different customer service clowns. He finally gets someone who tells him this:

"Your service was initiated through the Obama Stimulus Package of 2009 that subsidized Internet access for rural areas. But that deal only lasted for 10 years. Your 10 years is up. And we no longer offer that service in your area."

So he goes on to tell my dad that his only option is a Hot Spot at triple the monthly cost of his old deal. So he orders the Hot Spot. And he installs it himself (hours on the phone with tech supprt). But it doesn't work right because we don't get good enough cell coverage.

So dad spends another several hours on the phone with them, and they agree to send out a technician.

So today I meet the technician at our farm house. And he's this cool older black guy with a white beard. Really nice and professional. And I tell him the story, and he says:

"All of that is a total lie. The problem with your service is that someone cut the cable digging a water line. If your dad hadn't canceled his service to get the Hot Spot, it would have been back up and running within a couple or days."

It turns out that AT&T sales people make big commissions on the Hot Spots. So this guy just made up a bald faced lie to sell my dad something he didn't need.

And this wasn't one rogue sales guy. This technician says he hears this story all the time. There's an entire culture of some VPs at AT&T coaching their sales people on how to lie and scam their customers. Preferably older people like my father. Although I could have fallen for it almost as easy.

Anyhow, I know, I know. Greedy corporate scum bags. Why am I surprised? And I guess I'm just kind of sad. And my dad is embarrassed. And now we have to go through the BS of getting our old plan installed again. Which will take no telling how many hours on the phone with morons who will probably be trying to scam us again.

Rant over. This was cheaper than therapy. Thanks.

AT&T can EAD. I hate that they’re my best option for home internet, but I give them the bare minimum.

My story - got fuuuuucked by directv and booted AT&T from my life. Then had to take them back when I moved to get fiber. The install and sales douches lied about Wi-Fi coverage, fiber location, etc and when I needed it relocated they charged me a few hundred bucks to do basically nothing.

Oh and they basically use MLM type sales tactics. It’s fricking weird.

It’s pretty much to the point where you need to know what you want and keep demanding to talk to different people until you find one that can make it happen.

I hope you talk to your father a lot

I saw a report on telemarketers a long time ago. This included a CLASS on scamming. One of the key principles is to call old people, b/c they are often lonely since they're children have moved away and seldom call. Also old women are often widows. So they're more willing, even eager to talk with someone.

Another key: "Hello how are you today?"

The reason they begin like that
(instead of getting to the point) is to lengthen the call. Psychologically, the longer you stay on the line you more you are "invested" in the call. So the more likely you are to keep listening to their pitch

ADT does similar shite trying to raise prices on people under contract. Had one of their technicians tell me that. The technicians are always blue collar people who don’t wanna see people screwed over. The people on the phones are scumbags.

That's pretty much every company..

Old people call Dell - "I'd like to order the computer I saw in a mailer for $399"

Dell: "well what do you plan to do with it? Because you're going to want anti-virus, and a printer, and extra storage, and a photo editing program"..

Ends up $1300

AT&T has for years been synonymous with the very worst in US capitalism. And, at the same time they are known for terrible customer service.
Being an unethical, incompetent company is usually a recipe for failure.
Unless you are too big to fail…

You could try filing a report with the Federal Trade Commission. Probably end up not going anywhere but might make you feel better someone will read your complaint.

It's shitty of ATT to put your dad through that, but the cause of this is not ATT. How would he get service with a cut line? It sounds like whoever cut the line is on the hook here.

After my mother-in-law died I was looking thru her stuff and discovered she had paid 35 grand for a used Ford Escape…and this was in 2019, prior to the run up in prices on cars. Every add on service/warranty/product you can imagine. Some people make their living ripping off the elderly.

ATT is a regulated utility, file complaints with your state's public utility board.

Call your local news channels and generate some heat.

And state attorney general.
