At what point, if any, are you okay with a man defending himself against a women?

Long story short, a buddy of mine got into a finder binder with this women over the holidays. She clearly thought it was his fault. She got out and punched him. He backed up and she went in her car and got pepper spray. Pepper sprayed the shite out of him and he said he ran to his truck got in and locked the doors. More to the story but that’s the summary. Obviously she was arrested, but I was wondering what would you have done. At what point would you have defended yourself. I’m not saying with a gun, but maybe physically.
There seem to be two sides. One people say never touch a women. One says if she steps to you like a man you can defend yourself.
I think I’m in the middle. A man should never put his hands on a women until she is beating the shite out of you. I’m not talking a slap or one punch, but truly an arse beating them you can defend yourself.

I hit a woman once when I was about 12 or 13 and broke her nose. To be fair it was after she had shattered a champagne glass on my orbital bone and almost cost me my eye. Apparently she was wealthy and was used to boys paying attention to her but I was the hired help and was there to work. Early life lesson is some, if not all, women are cray cray and you need to just walk away. If you stay behind and defend yourself you will lose even if you are right.

Kidding. In bars I saw guys pull women into a bear hug that trapped their arms by their sides, either until they calmed down or help arrived. Helps to have them facing away, so spitting isn’t an issue.

In general, no man should ever hit a woman. In a physical altercation in which a woman initiates, if the man can grab her and secure her so that she will no longer attempt to hit or kick him, you do that.
Beyond that, you have to protect yourself as best as possible. But don't go beyond protecting yourself.
In your friend's situation. She probably hit him as an emotional reaction then the idea that he could retaliate scared her so she protected herself, but it is clearly assault.. If it was a man, then you square up. But if a chick gets out and punches you, in that situation, it's probably best to just go back to your truck/car, get in and lock the doors and wait for the police. Unless she is 6'5" 220 lbs... In that case, you punch the bitch.

I had a college girlfriend punch me in the face when she was drunk. It bloodied my lip.
I didn't hit her back but I sure wanted to. I laughed at her and said "You hit like a bitch too" which improved the situation immensely

We needed the work and got fired. They could not do much more as had it been a bit higher I would have lost the eye and they would have a massive lawsuit to pay out.
They had lots of money but it was new money and they had no class. Lots of folks on their side then but it caught up as the kids were first class screw ups and pissed through lots of that wealth. At best the family is upper middle class now and not as well liked as when they had more dough.
