If I gotta run into town my 8 & 4 year old have stayed at home a few times. If my son needs to get me he has kids messenger on his tablet. This is like running to the dollar store, not going to chill at a bar.
I used to walk to and from school at 5 and be home from 3-5 till my parents got home. Times are way different though, and that wasn't too long ago.

My nephews have been staying home alone since 10 and 8.
They're 16 and 14 now and very self sufficient and not afraid of every little thing.
16 yr old got a car for his birthday, so he's on his own in more places than just his house.

depends on for how long.
an hour or so, maybe 8 years old.
at work all day, etc. maybe around 12-14

Depends on the kid and depends on where you live and how much you trust your neighbors. Growing up my family lived out in the middle of nowhere so our parents left us home alone for short periods when I was around 10.

Some of these answers are surprising. I was babysitting other kids all day long at 13-14.
Anyway, I have an almost 11 year old stepdaughter. We have not left her home alone for any amount of time yet. The main reason is because she wouldn’t have access to a phone to call us (though she could use her iPad or call me on Alexa).
The other reason is that she is not mature/self sufficient enough. She’s an only child and only grandchild, and the adults have always done everything for her. I’ve been showing her how to do basic things on her own, which she picks up pretty quickly and appreciates knowing. We all gain pride from self sufficiency.
We are going to start practicing leaving her home alone for a couple hours at a time. She will be in middle school next year, and will be getting off the bus before we’re home. It’s hard to unclench when I don’t fully trust her not to do stupid shite and get hurt when we’re not there, but it needs to happen.

My son turned 14 last July. Wife and I took a trip to Dallas for Labor Day and he stayed home by himself for 3 nights to take care of the house and keep the dogs fed. Other parents we know thought this was crazy, but it all depends on the kid. Ours is very mature and responsible, plus I made sure he had a gun in his nightstand in case anything went down.
I don't remember when we started letting them stay at home while we ran to the store and such, but it was pretty young.

Not my kids, but I started staying at home by myself in 6th grade.
I work with someone who doesn't work when her daughter is out of school because 'she needs to be home with her'. Her daughter is in fricking high school.
