What are the goals of this mission...just to go around the moon? Are there any other secondary goals, or is this just more of a test thing to see about getting people back to the moon?
Mostly to field test systems. I’m sure there is secondary science being done, but that’s the main reason for the mission
EDIT: didn’t catch this was a thread bump.

I wonder what the legality issues would be with the US saying that we claim the moon as ours. We did plant a flag there, you know.
Posted on 3/31/26 at 8:19 pm to nealnan8
Mostly the fact that it means we are bowing out on a treaty.
And we aren’t the only group to place a flag on it.
The legal fun will be if other countries feel one country is taking more than their fair share of resources. The main outer space treaties were signed before things like moon mining were thought ever possible and when they tried to add it, not a single spacefaring country agreed to sign.

We stopped at Kennedy today driving from Orlando to St. Augustine…place is up for grabs. Everyone is pretty excited and the crowds are already pre gaming in the parking lots
Very cool to see it

Pending any new issues, we are GO for launch with 80% weather favorability.

The thing that’s sad is as historic as that flight is, it’s also destroying history.
One of the three engines of the final shuttle mission will be lost.

The fact NASA has to reuse that kind of engine is wild.

It was drawn up that way since before decommissioning the shittle.

Whoever came up with SLS deserves to never be involved with spaceflight again. Just a horrible misstep that's set back manned space flight a decade.

Walking around my neighborhood this evening:
Humanity (Americans) once again will be circling that in a few days.

Let’s go! Fun fact that many here don’t realize- a big part of this rocket is assembled in Louisiana. Michoud in New Orleans East. A lot of space flight history there.

Going off memory, but I think the RS-25 engine underwent some nice upgrades near the end of the shuttle program. I suspect that some of that was justified by planning to use them on whatever program would follow.
Some of the cost for SLS was ostensibly reduced by using STS (shuttle) platforms - engines, LH2 for propellant, SRBs, ETs, etc. But committing to this approach, also commits to any latent inefficiencies.

It’s hilarious how wasteful they make these programs that are designed to be “cost efficient”
I know what the Air Force did to the shuttle, but the same applies as well.
Case in point: look at what they are throwing away here.
Starship is a platform that can get even more payload to the moon than SLS.
Cost per launch: 100 million
Cost of the SLS, carrying Artemis and “designed to be cost effective” by cannibalizing parts from the Space shuttle?
Two point fricking five BILLION
Given they are using Starship to actually land on the moon they had to jump through hoops to rationalize needing Artemis at all. Looks like they will park a specialized Starship in lunar orbit as well as a gas station to refuel it and it’ll be used for multiple missions.

So the launch didn't already happen?
Did someone mean to say 17:24 CST or did they mean 17:24 CDT?
