Those consumer reports are pretty much garbage. A lot of them are nothing more than:

"Ohhh... my radio was hard to figure out." DING

"Ohhh... I couldn't figure out how to turn on my heated steering wheel." DING

"Ohhh... I couldn't open the decklid with my foot" DING

The shorthand is to buy a Mercedes S-Class sedan if you want the overall safest vehicle. They tend to have safety features today that will be standard/mandated on all vehicles 10-15 years later.

Which of these safety features do the Mercedes S-Classes have that Volvo's don't have? Honestly, just curious.

German cars are the best-engineered, and safest.
American cars are next.

My next RV will likely be Volvo, unless that was sold too.

Otherwise, I'll stay with Freightliner/ Cummins or DD

You're welcome to your opinion, but I've owned a lot of different vehicles in my life.

I speak from experience, and cars engineered for the Autobahn are extremely safe.

The X5 has a had a 5 star IIHS rating forever.

Why?

For the same reason you'd probably choose a Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki or Suzuki over the vast array of cheap shite Chinese motorcycles.

Volvo used to mean something. Now it's just a brand. Made by the Chinese.

I have owned 5 dating back to 1986. No issues. Son was T boned and went to hospital to be looked over. Sister had a roll over and walked away. I have also owned Mercedes, Audi and VW. I would definitely buy another Volvo before a German car.

I know it WAS true at one time before govt mandates started stacking up (your examples - Toronado?)....

My question is whether manufacturers using their luxury models to lead with features, esp safety, was as prevalent as in the 80s and 90s.

I bought the 2016 XC90 Inscription when it came out. Picked it up in Sweden. I thought it was a very comfortable car. The engine was under powered and the autopilot was crap. It eventually had a small fire in the engine compartment from a leaking antifreeze line and there was a massive recall/technical bulletin put out about it. Volve bought the car back. I will never own another Volvo, ever.

Reliability isn't great.

However, they are extraordinarily safe. Worldwide, since 2017, no one has died in a car accident while riding in a Volvo XC90. In Europe, no one has died since the model was first introduced.

We are on our fourth XC90, had a XC60 and also now have a XC40

Here are my thoughts:

1. They are good cars but I have noticed a few minor electrical issues with the 23 XC90 and the 23 XC40

2. We leased all of them but now I want to buy a 21 XC90, which I think was a great year.

3 The 40 is too small, better to go up to the 60 or 90

4. Best to get the bench second row if you have more than 2 kids

I'm on my 3rd XC90 in a row and no issues at all.
I'm about to run up 200k on a 2004. Great mechanically except some design flaws which I can only assume we're addressed in the later releases. Like water leaks around the windshield and a door and a hatchback that won't open.

Exteriors are great. Interior was dated and ugly when it was introduced 7 years ago.

Buy a Lexus for an upgraded Toyota or get a Toyota. Buy the Land Cruiser if you can swing it. Volvo makes trucks. Someone else makes Volvo branded cars. Are they bad, I wouldn’t know because I refuse to risk it

Volvo Cars is owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding (Geely Holding) of China.

The vast majority of the models are still designed, built, and assembled in Gothenburg. The ownership structure hasn’t changed much. The entire operation is still very much Swedish.

It’s not like Polestar which is designed in Sweden but built in China.

The infotainment system and software is very much due for an upgrade and lags competitors at the same price point.

I'm not saying German cars aren't safe, I know they are. But you can't leave Volvo off that list. Plus a 6100 lb Gross Vehicle Weight XC90 SUV is going be safer in a head-on than your 4700 lb GVW Mercedes sedan.
