Once the state took over the program, it became a political football

Fortunatey, I can afford to send my kids to whatever college they want. They’re great students and had offers from other schools out of state. They want to go to LSU and have worked to earn the tops scholarship. As a result, LSU gets a few kids who are good kids, and work hard to do well in school.

If they Make tops a needs based only program, they’re going to lose out on kids that have a choice about where they can go.

True, my kid has a full ride to Alabama but decided on La Tech for an engineering degree. If it were not for TOPS we would have pushed more for Alabama.

I believe it’s been proven to be the best single indicator actually.

Really? I thought part of doing well is knowing the test and how it is scored. Some private schools actually hire outside tutors/consultants to train the students how to do well on the test.

Basically, I don't think a standardized test is going to determine how well someone will do in college.

Agree.

Here's another mind blowing piece of information, students from private schools actually perform better in college than students from public schools.

70k is nothing.

A two parent household with both parents making the soon-to--be minimum wage is not far off of 70k.

The formula for estimated family contribution is so screwed up. A two parent household with an AGI of $70k, with only one child, $300k in cash/savings/retirement, and $200k in home equity would be expected to contribute $20k+ per year to their kid's college. That's close to 1/3 of their take home pay. This is the calculator I used

Those modest requirements are a 2.5 GPA and at least a 20 on the ACT

Both should be higher.

The amount should also be adjusted based on quality of the school. SUNO students should get nothing.

Wasn’t the whole point of tops to offer in state smart kids money to go to school in state and hopefully stay in state?

I do think that TOPS standards should be changed but I think the standards should be raised. Far too many people taking money and then dropping out because that 20 on the ACT and that 2.5 gpa doesn't actually mean they are smart enough to be successful.

It should be at a minimum a 2.75 GPA and a 23 on ACT. At least with that average you'll weed out more of the kids who just aren't cut out for college and focus on those who will likely be motivated to finish.

I think if you drop out and don't show you completed the degree then you should repay a percentage of what you've earned
