re: Are today's teenagers being less likely to work the real cause of the labor shortage?

OnlyFans and YouTubers are the reason for the Labor Shortage.
Everyone is flush with the Biden Bucks and trying to make it big. Next year will be telling. I expect a ton of layoffs and a complete turnover of the inflated wages that are being thrown around to retain workers.

There are plenty of people who are content with just enough to get by.

Sounds like some individuals and businesses looking to hire need to pull themselves up with their bootstraps and pay more.
This is capitalism. If you want labor, pay for it. Don't whine about there not being enough teenagers to hire at minimum wage.

The funny thing is, none of them were wrong.

You hang out with bitch arse guys that won't make their kids learn a work ethic at a young age. They are failing their boys.

unpopular opinion but i question how important working a job is as a high schooler (assuming they do well in school and are involved in sports, clubs, etc.)
most non-POS teenagers are pretty busy with sports, clubs, AP classes, etc. these days and there are only so many hours in a week.
My 17 yo son works weekends, gets good grades and already has his Eagle. He only has minor extracurriculars after Scouts.
15 yo son is totally focused on football, takes AP classes. He's lobbying not to work this summer and instead do the daily workouts w his teammates. He played Varsity as a freshman. This year I'll let him slide but next year as he starts driving he'll need a job.

This to me is the most puzzling thing out of everything you just posted. I have spoken to teenagers who say the same thing and I find it super strange. Can anyone comment on why this is becoming more prevalent? Back in high school we LIVED to get that drivers license.
Because the main incentive for us to drive was to go see our friends. Now they can "see" everybody in the city at their fingertips. Kids these days have much less of a desire to go out and party like we did. The ambivalence towards driving now is real.
I was at the DMV the moment it opened on my 15th birthday. Couldn't wait another second, lol.

I have a 17 year old that wants a job for the summer (not a brag but he's a 4.0 student and well spoken). He applied at all the fast food restaurants in the area (Scott) that have NOW HIRING signs. Subway told him they wouldn't hire minors, McDonald's gave him an interview and said it was great they would call him. Domino's and Pizza Hut didn't even respond to his application. Super 1 and Dollar General also haven't responded despite having now hiring signs. I told him he would make more money cutting grass than doing these menial jobs, but he wanted to experience the service sector before moving onto college and into a profession. I'm not sure what the deal is with these junk jobs, but if they really needed help they would hire high school kids that wanted to work ?

Probably shitty managers who don't even care enough to try and hire up to the full staff they need. They would rather bitch about not having enough employees.

I had a job at a bait/ sandwich shop on the lake I grew up on from 14-17. My neighbors owned it and would bring me home on week nights before I had my license. I caught more fish and killed more ducks because of it. I also stole more beer, cigs, and sandwiches than I want to admit. Me and my buddies were set. Kids will be kids. Those were the days. I’d have some spending money and a twelve pack every weekend when I’d close up at 10.

his son has no interest in driving
Yeah this is definitely a real shift and I find it kind of fascinating. My kid is just a toddler but I have coworkers with older kids and none of them got their licenses at 16. They all waited until they were 17-18, and some had to be forced even then.
It’s definitely mind boggling to me because like you, I couldn’t wait to get my license when I was in high school. It was like freedom. I lived in a more rural area though so it was a lot harder to hitch rides or walk anywhere. And we obviously didn’t have Uber either.
Seems like a lot of high school kids carpool everywhere now. In the mornings/afternoons I often see 3-5 kids the same age in school uniforms in one vehicle. I guess between that and the availability of Uber/Lyft it’s just not that important to them anymore.
And if I’m being honest.. I probably wouldn’t have worked in high school either if I didn’t need gas money. I guess the new play is to make them pay for their own data plan or something.

Yeah, let’s ignore the droves of data points out there and go with your hunch from talking to some old dudes in towels.

The great thing about it, kids who want to work will have unlimited opportunity.

There’s no such thing as a labor shortage—only employers not willing/able to pay for labor.

I agree, I also enjoyed getting the heck out of my house on my own though. I think with most major differences in society today we can point at social media as the culprit as some other posters have stated.

It’s not just the kids. Everyone of those parents caused that situation with their kids. I bet if they would quit paying for their kids phone and everything else they do I bet everyone of those kids would find a job if it meant not having a phone or consoles to play video games

When they are being paid to play games and film it and post on youtube? Yeah.

Because they don't tell them work or else
