Catholic schools 1 thru 8 and a private high school.
I think I see the answer in this sentence.

Zero tolerance policies have made it the same discipline to defend yourself as if you started picking in kids.

Because of that, bullies are allowed to bully and never get popped in the mouth

I seen a good bit at CE Byrd in the 90's. Which was a Magnet and Neighborhood School.

Not a Catholic or Private School granted.

Violence in schools is highly correlated with demographics

You went to a soft private school then. There was at least one fight a week at mine.

I was high school in the 80's. I think remember two fist fights. One of them a guy was knocked out cold. Caught right on the chin.

I think there would be less bullying if kids could throw hands, and not get expelled for it.

Wow! I use to see one at least once a week, but I went to public school.

Saw some crazy things happen during a fight. One time at recess this guy was standing against the wall and this other guy darts out of the doors, runs straight to the guy standing against the wall and just laid a haymaker. The dude's head went back, hit against the wall and he just fell.

Saw gang fights. One dude got jumped by 3 or 4 other people. Somehow he got his belt off and he started swinging it. All of a sudden there was one dude on the grown. Hand on face with blood running down hand. Some other people jumped in for the dude who got jumped. It was an all out brawl.

One time this black dude and white girl got into it in PE. I was in a class near the gym and the next class me and the black dude had together so we always went to class together. This girl runs up to him and starts yelling "Hit me! Hit me! What's wrong you don't want to hit a girl?!" He laughed and he told her "I am not hitting a girl". She kept on "You pussy! Why? So just because I am a girl you scared to hit me or are you just scared?" He was trying to walk away from her and she just kept on. Then she said it "What's wrong you stupid fricking nword".

Dude dropped his book sack, threw a punch and she dropped. Curled up and started crying like a baby. He grabbed his book sack told us "see yall next week" and went to the principal's office. It was the craziest thing because all of a sudden her body went limp.

I've seen a fight break out in the cafeteria between a group of people. One dude grabbed his plate and hit another dude across the face with it.

In a certain part of school the classes were divided by dividers and not walls. Don't know what happened, but in middle of class. Someone in my class who sat in the back got into it with someone in the other class who sat in the back and evidently one threw something over the divider and hit the other one. They were going at it. Both teachers tried to break it up at first, but just stopped, went get the principal and they beat the shite out of each other.

Many schools press charges now so it has stopped a lot of that.

The alternative schools seem to work well for some kids.

Back in the early to mid 1980's, post John Parker desegregation motion {busing}, Tara High School had fights almost everyday. The whole commons area during lunch and morning break would collapse as students were yelling and screaming. Shite was unreal. Had multiple races start fights cause they were trying to claim the territory.
