Similar to being "predisposed to alcoholism", I'm starting to think that criminals are also "born that way" there's nothing really you can do to change them.

I'm pretty sure many of us had a kid in elementary school that acted like a girl...and low and behold he comes out later on in life...to no one's surprise. The question, have you ever been shocked to find out someone you know (know, not just an acquaintance) is in jail?

I've known a lot of criminals but met most of them at a 90% minority public high school(football team). But I did grow up with a couple kids that ended up in prison. Looking back, just like the gay kid, they were criminal kids. Bullies, theft, vandalism, etc. One was my cousin, he did the dumbest shite. One day we were walking down the street and he picks up a rock, walks into someone's yard and throws the rock right through their front window. It was a Saturday around lunch time. Guy runs out of the house and my cousin starts laughing and runs away with me and his brother just standing there like WTF?. He was 8 years old, and this was just one example. Stealing out of his mom's purse to to go Burger King down the road. Stealing bikes, my mom's jewelry when he was 11, and starting fights with everyone old, young, man, woman, dog.
Caught him drinking milk from a pit bull's nipple who just had a litter. My Aunt is happier when he's in jail, because she knows he not out committing crime.

So again, have any of you really known someone their whole life who ended up being a criminal, and if so, did them getting arrested and going to prison come as a complete shock to you? Were the a criminal their whole life in your opinion, why/why not?

I've read criminality can be both nature and nurture simultaneously.

I’d say it’s a combination of being born that way/substance abuse/lack of parenting.

That's... Not how "minorites" work. I mean, I get it was a public highschool and all, but that's no excuse.

Some people are born sociopaths.

Some are just raised poorly though.

No. They both get sucked into it by hanging out with a bad element.

In my experience, an extraordinarily small percentage of the population is incorrigible. And of those, most of them seem to have been nurtured that way, as opposed to it being nature.

nobody is predisposed at birth to alcoholism
nobody is predisposed at birth to homosexuality
nobody is predisposed at birth to crime

it's all bullshite lies to control people and the #1 reason to control people is to take their money.

So no arguments on sociopaths, it's that 'poor' argument that people want to hold onto.

Scientists have identified more than 100 genetic variants linked with risk-taking, according to a groundbreaking new study.

"Genetic variants that are associated with overall risk tolerance -- a measure based on self-reports about individuals' tendencies to take risks in general -- tend to also be associated with more speeding, drinking, tobacco and cannabis consumption, and with riskier investments and sexual behavior," said the study's corresponding author Jonathan Beauchamp. He's an assistant professor of economics at the University of Toronto, Canada.

DNA research is still in its infancy, but we've already begun to see links to genetics and behavior.

I see all these homeless drug zombies, and wonder when did their parents first start having problems with them....15 years old or 5 years old.

Nearly every crime of substance starts with a choice. Nearly every criminal has the free will to make that choice.

Short of legitimate impulse control issues or sociopathic tendencies, there are no naturally-born criminals. Every crime they undertake starts with a choice and a risk/reward analysis.

Some of them are born that way, like sociopaths, serial killers, (probably politicians and lawyers and certain corporate types), etc. Some criminals are a product of their environment or unfortunate circumstances. Some criminals are probably not people but just make a foolish choice when they commit their crime, say a crime of passion or a crime while under the influence of alcohol. Some criminals may not see the harm in their crime or some may not even realize their commuting a crime.
