I have Polo sweaters from the early 2000's still in great shape. Much better made than most of what I see now for sale at Dillards.

NOW I will say the Broooks Brothers sweaters are legit. I've ordered three in the last couple of years. So damn heavy and well made its a workout just putting them on. These suckers will last forever.

As for overpriced jackets, just like shoes, quality and good construction is what it is. You get what you pay for.

Let me get this straight, you paid over $500 for a jacket then had to spend over $200 for repairs just to make it 10 years and you think that’s good?

Guaranteed a $50 jacket from Walmart can last 10 years without any repairs

This is an argument that is a road to nowhere. The Barbour is one of the types of jackets that can actually last a lifetime and never go out of style with proper care. They look good casually in the outdoors or can be worn in a Wall Street office.

It’s similar to my mechanical watches, particularly Rolex and Omega. They also will require servicing. If someone thinks mechanical watches are stupid, then it’s not worth wasting breath to explain.

Same can be said for firearms, luggage, ski equipment, etc.

The funniest part of this thread, is I wonder what percentage of the dipshits talking about how stupid these jackets are spend $80-90k+ on Chevy or Ford vehicles that aren’t Corvettes or GT40s?

Spend your money as you see fit is a concept a large portion of this forum can’t conceive.

This is the opinion of TD's Lifestyle Correspondent:
quote:

Barbour is great if you have short English stubby arms with no ape index to speak of. Tom Beckbe has tall sizes. Some folks enjoy hunting for vintage Barbour and Belstaff jackets and that’s great but they just don’t fit me. Schaefer is the gold standard for western jackets in my opinion. Schaefer does waxed cotton like Barbour as well but it’s cut with western style.

Definitely don't send it in to Barbour to be rewaxed. That's the waste of money. So easy to do yourself. And as far as the price, you can find them online for sale. MSRP on mine was 400, but only paid 250 if I recall correctly. Timeless look, quality performance, will last forever. Same as my Filson computer bag. Cost more upfront, but has out lasted any bag I had before and looks as good as the day I bought it.

Bought a Barbour a couple of years back and returned it because the shoulder area was lacking and built for a tiny little British man with narrow shoulders, I assume.

Schaefer and Filson fit me well but be advised Filson sizing can be hit or miss. I bought a tin cloth Filson jacket a few weeks back and had to size down to a medium from a large while one of their other jackets would require me sizing up to an XL. Good quality that will last a lifetime.

I've got the Bedale waxed jacket that is probably 30 years old. Heavy as all get out but its a great jacket. Also have a quilted jacket that is perfect for Houston winters and a fleece that is easily the hottest fleece I own.

All in all, great jackets for the price. Just have to re-wax the Bedale every few years, but that like an hour process at most.

It’s an antiquated water proofing technology

Most of the appeal is tradition, but they are functionally superior when it comes to moving through the woods when there’s real undergrowth. You’re not going to tear ones of these. And I’ve used one as a drop cloth when changing tire, which you wouldn’t do with a plastic jacket. It would get shredded almost immediately.

Yes and Yes. I will never spend $600+ on a jacket. That's so dumb if you live within 200 miles of the gulf. That screams I care so much about how others perceive me and need to wear brands that impress others because there's no practical need when plenty other jackets are fine for here.

Ok, im literally that person who is the opposite of this. I wear three different flannel shirts all week just alternating. I hardly ever buy clothes. I do care about buying quality whether that be my tools for my job or my clothes. I care about 1) Type and quality of material 2) Quality of workmanship 3) Where and how something is made

Barbour is made with quality cotton, is made to last and is made in a first world country.

You can buy your made in Chinese sweatshop jacket, I dont really give a damn but when you say things like...

quote:

No I'm not poor, I make over $200k at 30 years old which might be more than every other 30 and under here.

...you come across as an obnoxious, holier than thou douche

I still have waxed long coat I bought when I was in Scotland circa 1994. Still wear it on occasion.

This is also my answer. Not having midget arms or body, I cannot really wear their clothing.

Besides, while waxed canvas is a good looking and timeless tradition, there are better ways to stay warm and dry with lighter materials.

If you watch The Crown, all the royals wear them in the hunting/outdoors scenes.

Article about the jackets in the show

quote:

Barbour is an old British brand, best known for its waxed cotton coats and other waterproof protective gear. Its jackets are staples of British countrywear. They’re also famously worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond, race-car legend Steve McQueen, and glamorous dogs. In recent years the brand has collaborated with the likes of Alexa Chung, Laura Ashley, and even Supreme.

On top of that, Barbour jackets are beloved by the royal family, which I was reminded of while watching season four of The Crown this weekend. The Cut’s fashion writer, Emilia Petrarca, told me that the entire season is basically “Barbour-jacket porn,” which is accurate. The first two episodes contain a dozen Barbour jackets — quilted, paneled, collared, buttoned, zippered. It is, indeed, Barbour-jacket porn.

No. They’re great jackets that are timeless and will last a long while if you take care of them. I rewax mine once a year. Takes me 45 minutes and it’s like I’ve got a brand new jacket

To follow your comment, or buy a $1,000+ phone every 4 to 5 years. Knowing that is 90% not something that will be usable in 5 to 7 years.

Can you describe that process?

Mine is about 10 years old and ready for a rewax.
