No and No.

To clarify, I do not consider Barbour coats to be overrated as they are fantastic wet weather /hunting coats and for what you get they are not overpriced.

They make sense in rainy areas with moderate climates. Like the UK. They don’t breathe, and you’ll want to layer if it’s colder. Barbour will always repair any wear or damage, I’ve got one that is mostly repair panels at this point. It looks cool.

They will last the rest of your life if taken care of properly and you will have a grandkid wear it one day also.

I've got an Ashby. Only complaint is I got it when I was 50 lbs lighter and was between sizes. I opted for the smaller size since I'm rarely layering up for weather in Houston. Now I could use the size up. It's been 5 years and only had to re-wax once

Pardon my ignorance. I'd never heard of Barbour jackets until this thread. What is a waxed jacket? I tried to googgle this question with no luck.

Obviously I need to step my jacket game up.

I have a 20 plus year old Barbour Ventile. Best coat I have ever owned. Unfortunately they do not make them anymore. Ventile was utilized in RAF WW2 jackets for pilots to assist in protection from being downed in the English Channel. Barbour builds high quality garments that are worth their price in my humble opinion.

They're kind of like luxury watches. There are cheaper alternatives that do the job better but it's not about that.

the greatest, best outdoors wear clothing man has ever contrived. take it from someone who depends on superior clothing for foul weather work: there's no equal.

: A waxed jacket is made from cotton that's treated with wax to make it water-resistant. Evolved from the oiled sailcloth once used by 18th-century mariners for protection from weather and waves, current-day waxed cotton fabrics are treated with paraffin or beeswax-based formulas.

Google: what is a waxed jacket

I’ve had mine for over 10 years and still is in great shape (re-waxing is a must).

Feel like they aren’t as trendy as they used to be though.

My heaviest one that I wear during Northeast winters is on winter #10. I think I paid a bit over $500 for it in Nov 2014. I’ve paid for re-waxing once (~$85) and got some repairs done two years ago (~$125). Jacket still looks and works great.

Over $700 bucks and only ten years old.

I’d call that over rated.

I have an LL Bean that I’ve had since highschool in the 90’s.
Pretty sure it was under $100 then. And looks like unde $300 now
Zero repairs.
Doesn’t need waxing.
And handles Great Lakes winters no problem

I love mine. A jacket that will last forever made in a first world country. To me that is worth the price

I’ve got my grandfathers Bedale from the early 90’s. Wear it almost daily during winter. I also bought my wife a new Bedale and she loves it. Love the smell of the older ones.
