re: Are any new home appliances better today than ones made 10, 20, 30 years ago?

We have been married for 49 years. Our first refrigerator was a GE that lasted 23 years and yes it was that ugly avocado green. Second refrigerator was also a GE. Decided to buy a new refrigerator with Covid stimulus cash. We took our time, did the research, decided the Samsung with all those bells and whistles were junk, moved old refrigerator to garage as a backup, and we bought a Bosch.
We also bought a Bosch dishwasher to replace the noisy contractor grade dishwasher that came with the house.
Buy quality, read the reviews and be patient. It does pay off in the long run, Bosch may be more expensive but they are well worth it.

My house was built in 51, I've got the original stove/oven.
I can actually one up you to some degree...
My wife and I rented a place that was that had a depression era stove/oven (I think..) in it that still worked. The oven in the Sally Fields movie "Places in the Heart" is exactly the same oven we had. Thirty years after we moved out that thing still works...

The only way thing I’ve seen get better and cheaper in my life are TVs. Appliances damn sure haven’t gotten any better.

Speed Queen is better than any other washer but the other appliances especially fridges and dishwashers are shite.
I have a 25 year old fridge. I'll keep it running forever. Subzero 595.
Dishwashers don't last. New ones use DC motors instead of AC and take so much longer.
Microwave are cheap don't get those stupid drawer ones though. So stupid.
Ovens are simple and other than the control boards are mostly the same.

I keep mine simple. My whirlpool washer and dryer were bought in 06. I've had the gears and other stuff in the washer replaced. Fridge I replaced two years ago but got a whirlpool. NO fancy stuff, not even a water/ice dispenser in the door. Does exactly what I want. Keep things cold. I figure the less computerized crap, the longer it lasts.
Bosch dishwasher went out after 20 years. Replaced it with a nice Kitchenaid that cost nearly a grand. takes three hours but does a great job.
What I'm seeing is if you buy commercial grade, the appliances are much better. The cheaper the price, well, no such luck.
I'm on the Lowes website right now. There is a whirlpool washer, top loaded, analog, all the stuff you want. It's also nearly a thousand dollars. So it is there, you just don't want to pay for it.

My grandma’s house was built in 1963 and the original GE double oven just died earlier this year. Amazing quality.

Heck no!
We built and move in April 2019
Last week I replaced a Ge Dishwasher, AC coil, and Condenser on one of our units.
Everything is made to throw away today.

I bought a new fridge about 7 years ago. Told the guy I did NOT want one with a water and ice dispenser. He looked at me like I was crazy. I told him that everyone I know that has one of those (most people) have issues with them.
My dishwasher is from 1994. The kind with a turn knob and the buttons you depress. Like three choices. It is loud so i run it when I go to bed, but it works. Buddy of mine got a high end Bosch model and the motherboard on the damn thing went out inside of 36 months.

We had this thread a few years ago. Someone came along that was in the know and stated that those old machines that last forever would be too expensive to build these days. They've been engineered down to a point where they're made of nothing. Not sure how true the first part was, but the second part makes sense.

Even outside of appliances, nothing is as good as it was 20 years ago.

Nope. Planned obsolescence.

The answer is no. It goes for more than just appliances. Some products may be more energy efficient, but nothing lasts anymore. shite breaks way too soon.....and I think that's by design.

We got speed Queen washer and dryers. No complaints so far. They are under warranty until 2029.
Mrs. Sparks (no pics) and I swear by them.

I agree.
I have a Chest Deep Freezer, bought by my In laws the 70's.
We bought our Refrigerator in the 90's.
Washing Machine in the 90's.
Dryer in the 90's that died a couple years ago.
Had a Dehumidifier (Sears) that lasted over twenty years. The replacement lasted about a year. The nest Replacement lasted about a year. The next replacement has lasted about 10 years.

Well, alot of appliances have more sensors, digital, and electrical parts. Just like in cars, don't last as long. More complex.....

Still have the original ovens that my parents had built in the house from 1976. Also a large stand up freezer from 1973 in the pantry & the gas dryer from 1979 are still going strong.

Currently looking for one of those tan garage fridges from the 90s but was actually from the 80s. Just need some cold storage some things but don’t want the hassle of a new one breaking for no reason and the repair cost being that of a new one

I bought commercial grade coin-op washer and dryer from Lowes. They're analog. I have a multi-family home I rent units out. After about a year the dryer switch failed but it was covered by warranty for the parts, I had to pay labor. Now 3 years later they're both working fine and I hope that continues for a while. No doubt the stuff our parents had lasted forever. The Samsung fridge I bought in 2017 is going pretty well, but the ice maker needs TLC every so often where we need to scrape the ice off to get it to work. The Bosch dishwasher we got in 2018 seems to be great so far and is very quiet.
