Are any new home appliances better today than ones made 10, 20, 30 years ago?

Repairing an old top loader washing machine got me to pondering if there are any new home appliances that are better today than their predecessors? Disregarding energy efficiency for the discussion, and say style, too, what appliances are better for the consumer now than 10, 20, even 30 years ago?

Washing machines are way worse now. Nothing will ever beat the turn the knob and start your washing of the old school washers.

Dishwashers? Why do current models take like 3 hours to finish a load?

Microwaves? Haven't changed much since the 80s. Thankful at least government intervention hasn't made these worse.

Refrigerators? Who ever needs a digital display? No improvements here, maybe even worse, since they won't last as long.

Stoves? They're about to take away your gas Stoves.

Coffee pots?
True coffee drinkers will swear by your grandmother's percolator.

Only thing I can think of, and you have to go outside for this is a pellet grill. Those are pretty nice that wasn't around decades ago.

I dunno. Maybe I'm old school, but I can't think of any home appliances that by getting a new one, you're improving the functionality.

Short answer is no.

You are mostly paying for a bunch of over-engineered technology gimmicks that you will never use and are much more prone to cause problems that someone with basic hand tools, a multi-meter, and common sense can't repair.

None of them are.

We still have the original oven in our house from when it was built in 1975. It's ugly but the damn thing still works like a tank. I refuse to replace it

Appliances are not meant to last these days. Throw hot water heaters to your list. They look nicer and have cooler features, but they will break in 5-10 years.

I’m on year 13 with my washer, dryer, refrigerator, stand up freezer

I did buy the commercial grade ones that look shitty but are built like tanks however.

Bought my washer and dryer on clearance at HD... Floor models... They worked for 22 years. The only repairs have been a switch on the washer and a sensor on the dryer.

If you can find a decent working washer, dryer, or fridge from the 90’s/early 2000’s, buy it instead of a new one.

Will be 1/5 to 1/10 of the price, and will do an as-good, if not better job as a new one.

My appliances never seem to break. I used to fix appliances when I was a plumber back in the 70’s, and today’s are much more reliable.

We got speed Queen washer and dryers. No complaints so far. They are under warranty until 2029.

All of mine break. It's been an extremely rare thing for me to have just about any modern appliance give me 5 years of problem free service

Dishwashers now are so much quieter though. I remember one we had in the 80s and that thing was loud as frick.

I like our Bosch we bought three years ago. It’s held up well enough and has some nice features to it.

No

If you have an old washer with real knobs and a real agitator repair it till it rust completely out.

Analog and mechanical controls were more reliable than the digital on any appliance.

THIS^^^

The latest is home owners policies refusing to insure unless water heaters more than 7 yrs old are replaced…

Ask Napoleon. He repairs them for a living. Energy star requirements ruined them all as well as unnecessary technology.

I’ve lived in my house 16 years and I’m on the 4th dishwasher. The one that was here when we moved in wasn’t drying or cleaning all that well. Replaced it when we bought a new oven. Gave me about 4-5 years and quit working. Got another and it did the same thing. Quit drying altogether. Finally bought a Maytag and installed it a couple of years ago and it does take forever but it is super quiet and cleans and dries almost everything in there. A few plastic kids cups in the top rack are still wet but the dishes and silverware are always dry. Bonus is I don’t mind starting it during the day since it is quiet.

They keep adding new bells and whistles that look advanced, but will always skimp on the tech needed to truly make that a quality feature. Meanwhile they will save money by making the actual important parts cheaper and shittier, but people are so distracted by being able to link their ring camera to their fridge that they don’t notice until the whole thing goes out in 3 years.

I didn't need a water heater with bluetooth capability. That's what I got, though, because at the time I needed it those were pretty the only options because we murdered our supply chain.
