Leave State Farm. I suggest going with a local reputable insurance agency who has access to several options. I did and its so convenient.

Unfortunately, plaintiff attorneys gauge their ask in a suit based on how much insurance you have.

Is there any practical reason for them to have this information other than this?

Yes. I have to carry maximums on the auto policies to then add on the umbrella.

I have $2 million with Chubb with UM coverage for like $650 a year.

You should shop around.

Basically. It also steps in if primary insurance refuses the claim.

So you have $1,000,000 in coverage for your home. And all you’re paying is $2450 per year?

Sounds like you’re getting off easy if I’m understanding this correctly

My 1MM umbrella went from $600 to $1100 this year with State Farm.

And I have 3 cars and home with them.

I’m not renewing.

That makes sense

it was always wild how much you pay for the 250 and then you get a million on top as an insane rate

Yes, and you typically have to have higher underlying liability limits. It can pay for excess liability exposure as well as legal fees above what the underlying policy will pay. If your limits are $50K, your insurer is only going to defend you up to that amount.

It’s basically excess liability coverage. It’s not for the replacement of his home. There are also stipulations that you have to meet, normally it’s already carrying a very high homeowners liability policy and a very high auto liability policy.

So the $2400 a year is in addition to his normal homeowners and auto insurance that he pays.

Brother lives in TX. His umbrella coverage is more than double what we have ($2m vs $5m), and pays half of what we do. Plus, it covers policies not written by State Farm as long as he discloses the policy numbers. Anything we have that is not covered by State Farm is excluded. Thanks, Louisiana!

It’s rare for an umbrella policy to get hit outside of a big jury verdict. You’re going to have a max policy in order to get the umbrella.

So, I have a couple of more questions. It sounds like your umbrella policy is heavily dependent on your auto or homeowner’s insurance.

- is your umbrella premiums dependent on the details of your homeowners and auto policies?

-is your umbrella premiums dependent on what company your homeowners and auto policies are with?

In most cases they are mutually exclusive. The umbrella policy writer will require you to have high levels of liability coverage on your car and house b/c the policy is essentially additional coverage that doesn't kick in unless the judgement is more than the coverage of your auto or homeowner's policy.

Some insurance carriers will only offer umbrella policies if you bundle both your car and homeowner's policy with them. Others, such as RCI, will sell just an umbrella policy to you but dictate higher levels of coverage to protect themselves.

The SF subsidiary Dover Bay effectively non-renewed me for homeowners by placing outrageous new terms for coverage that were impossible to meet.

SF is trying to pull as much exposure out of LA as they can, while not putting their captive agents out of business.

The agents must be hurting though. One is trying to get me to re-do a $75k term life policy. The anoint of time they are spending relative to the premium is absurd
