Ran across this while reading about the history of Gulf Shores -

“An Indian burial ground revealed 8 foot tall skeletons after being eroded by a strong storm. Florida Indians reportedly told Ponce de Leon that the Fountain of Youth lay west near the land of the giants. Archaeologists claim that some of the Indian mounds found are older than the Egyptian pyramids.”

Neat. I've always wanted to know more about the north American mound builders.

I’ve read they used to hunt buffalo along the coast. Obviously not the giant herds seen out west, but they were around before whitey showed up.

The gulf coast Indians probably didn’t do much horse riding. Horses were introduced to America by the European explorers

I read a book about a spanish man whose ship bounced around what now is Florida and ended up just west of the Mississippi. I think they began with 300? mean and 2 survived (separately). He noted the large Indians in Floria and said their arrows could go a man's hand width into an oak tree. He ship and rafts were wrecked, and all provisions lost. The Indians that caught and enslaved him in south Texas were always on a starvation diet and on borderline existence. He eventually got reunited with another survivor and made it to Mexico area.

Somewhat related, if you’re looking for a good read, I’d recommend Empire of the Summer Moon, about the rise and fall of the Comanche. They were a brutal people

There were Indians in BSL 8000 years ago, or so I’ve been told by ground penetrating radar operators who discover shell deposits.

His name was mouthful, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. Really interesting book that lets you see how the Indians lived on the gulf coast at the time. I think it took place in the early half of the 1500’s.

No, no. We can’t talk about stuff like that now. The only acceptable narrative is that Indians were always gentile “one with nature” hippies and were victimized by white colonizers

There's actually a passage in Conquest of New Spain where the Tlaxacans show Cortes all these gigantic skeletons they have, calling them their ancestors, and no one even comments on it. There are lots of references to extremely large "people" in various ancient literatures, but I don't think a definitive answer has been proposed as to what these peoples are referencing. What is true that in the post-Neolithic era, average human heights fell significantly, which might serve as an explanation for why you see descriptions of very tall skeletal remains in the source literature.

Those were midgets compared to the Gadsden Indians.

Gadsden Times

Seems like every area has similar tales.

I’ll have to check that one out.

The Gulf is another interesting book. The conquistadors were blown away by how large and healthy the Indians were. They fished the gulf while the Spanish were trying to survive off corn (that the Indians would use to feed their animals)
