No we're not. The GDP of Russia is two thirds of that of France, one half of Germany's. Putin rules a Thugocracy.

Peter the Great captured the ports along the Baltic and created the Imperial Russian Navy. As a result, his and the Romanov empire became a much larger empire, one that we think of when we consider the former Soviet Union. He created a true cultural revolution in which at the time was a medieval mindset and Russia became a major European power as a result. By today’s standards Peter the Great would be considered a “Thugocracy” tell me I’m wrong, so I can throw away that history minor I graduated with.

This is pretty much true. But is Putin annexing Crimea equal to Peter annexing what would become St Petersburg? I’m not so sure. Same goes with Kazakhstan. Only because I’m under the belief that Russia has more than enough oil in their border already, and Kazakhstan would be an attempt to keep China at bay.

If Putin grabbed Ukraine before he dies, he’s getting close to Peter the Great levels of influence.

The importance here is that it is now a strategic battle now for control between China and Russia which is why Russia/Belarus and other former USSR countries are sending in troops by the minute because they can't let China take control over the country and region. It would be devastating to Russia if the country fell into Chinese control.

Actually pulling for the Russians here. Had it up to here with Chicom hijinks.

Hell, Putin has a much easier path than what Peter Romanov was staring at, which was the Ottoman Empire. I’m of the opinion and it’s just that an opinion, that Putin sees this as a once in a lifetime opportunity to not only accomplish the strategic, but historical as well. It would be a hell of an accomplishment for a so-called former KGB thug.

Big difference - Peter was groomed by the European aristocracy when he was a young man. Gave him incredible perspective when bringing Russia out of the medieval age.

Seems like Putin has been dealing with some sort of economic/global sanction every year

Kazakhstan revolt

After listening to the Supreme Court arguments on the mandates this morning, as an atheist, I'm going to lead us in a word of prayer.

Jesus,

I see what you have done for the people of Kazakhstan and I want that for me.

Amen

The people are burning the government buildings as well as the homes of their politicians. Most of the politicians have fled or been captured. Military and police are facing similar fates if they don't join the revolution. Russia has deployed troops at the request of the prime minister and are now attempting to put down the revolt and regain control of the country. The Revolution seems to be strongest in Almaty, the nation's largest city.

At least, that's what I've gathered from the very limited information which has been able to leak out of the country with 95% of the internet shut down.

"When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."

Sounds like the people no longer fear the government.
