Yup. The counterintuitive way to get a better credit score is get another credit card, all else equal.

You get to 700 paying your bills.
You get to 800 by having decent available credit.
You get to 850 by watching everything.
Anything over 850 is a perfect storm.
Over 40k in available revolving. Under 30% utilization. No credit pulls in the last two years. At least four revolving accounts older than 3 years.
As someone who sees this shite daily, I am WAY more impressed by a sub 400 than I am a 700-860.
You have to work to get into the 300s

Maybe. I was but it dipped into the high 780s last year when we used a couple interest free CCs to put about 25k on for a home improvement. It's all paid off now so the DTC is really good at the moment. At least untl they close those accounts I guess.
The system is flawed and easily manipulated.
Wife was 820s last I checked.

Briefly 800+ before we took out a HELOC to pay off 6% APR student loans. We now can write off that interest on taxes. But one or two of the credit reporting agencies categorize HELOC debt along with credit cards making our available vs. total credit look bad. An now the FED is raising the prime rate every few months. Time to pay that sh1t off.

Student loans make it very difficult to get into the 800s. Been mid 700s for the last two years. Had no issue buying a home and vehicle within the last two years so I'm fine with it.

I have a good score now but 3 years ago I was in the 500s for BS that I won't get into. Let's just say "my lender sending part of my student loan debt to another lender without me knowing whom, when, or how to pay," a $60 bottle of cologne I bought for my brother on my Macy's card one time for Christmas."
I've never (intentionally) not paid my bills in full, but a couple of things slipped through the cracks even though I always had the money to pay and paid all I thought I owed. I'm not an OT badass and guess I should have been better but I wasn't and if it weren't for my wife handling everything now I'm sure it would happen again.
The crazy thing is that I've never missed a serious payment in my life (car/rent/mortgage/insurance(s)/medical/etc...).
If you ever get caught it in, it's hell getting out. Even checking in on your score to see your progress used to affect your score. Sucks.

yes and I am not in Louisiana, but it would be the same there.
My wife is 800+ too but she does it with zero interest credit cards. She's always in debt. I need to change my language. She's learning to save up for what she wants and to accept the tension that goes with waiting and sometimes missing out.

I average around 790. There are two reasons I'm below 800:
I don't carry any debt.
I change credit cards every 3-6 months so I can get frequent flyer bonus miles.
Don't care if I'm below 800, I'm never going to need to borrow money again.

Your credit score is higher if you have some loans you're still paying on. Mine was mid-800 but went down to 790 when I paid off my mortgage and started paying cash for vehicles.

Doesn't it max out at 850?

I'm at 822 and I could care less.

I worked for Equifax for a decade. It's much more complicated than just paying your bills on time. 800 is very difficult. You have to have decades of credit history, a decent income and very little debt. I've never paid a bill late in my life and mine is 748.

This place never ceases to amaze me, 3 pages and nobody below 750.
