Seems like an overlooked breed anymore. Or maybe its just I don't know anybody with one. Anyway ive contacted a few breeders in GA and think this might be our next family dog
Any last minute tips or advice?

Look into a Boerboel...better than a Rott in every way.

Get a Corso. BEST dog I've owned.

they need exercise, they can tend to be lazy and get fat

Sweet little puppers, ours haven’t even killed anyone yet

Are you serious?
This dog will eat your kids.
This is not a family pet.
WTH are you thinking?

I had a lab rot mix that was the best and smartest dog I've ever had. My brother had a full rot that was a very great dog too.
Smart and loyal dogs, but you have to train it and establish and maintain "dominance" early.

Is this just the cool internet thing to say about dogs

A lot of ignorance in this thread.
College buddy of mine had one when we were at LSU. One of the most docile dogs I have ever been around. Really laid back. They can be trained to kill but like all breeds it is all in how you train/treat them.

For all the reasonable people.. i do have a newborn due in a month, but we're moving to almost 10acres in south GA so whichever dog we get will have ample room to cut loose

At LaTech in the 80's one of the defensive lineman brought his rotties over to the area between Neilsen and Caruthers dorms. It was a momma and her male pup. The student was huge, like 280-320 and all of it muscle.
Anyway, momma was on leash, 9 month old pup loose but well trained so he'd come when called and such...except stray mutts (3) came through the area. Rott pup wanted to play but momma was protective.
Took about a month for the ski tracks to grow back in the grass where big ol' defensive lineman dug in his heels and only slowed momma down as she steadily progressed toward the lone dumb mutt that stayed to play with pup. Momma got almost within striking distance when mutt decided it was time to go. 90 degree change of direction in the ski tracks.
TLDR: Full grown Rotty gonna go wherever it wants, when it wants.

No shite. Rots are incredibly devoted and protective of their families, their children especially.
Keep your corgis and chihuahuas, pussies. Rots are fantastic family dogs.

Had a female growing up, absolutely the sweetest dog I've ever owned. She got snake bit and died.....

This is consistent with pretty much everything Ive read. I was willing to be called "trashy" by a few douches to get real opinions

Knew 2 guys in college that had them. One was great but the other had parvovirus as a pup and was unpredictable. Overall I think they get a bad rap but get one from a reputable breeder. I wouldn’t hesitate to own one.
