I'm not saying your stupid, but everyone I've known who has had one, had struck me as the most intelligent people. Let me recommend a good family dog. Get a Basset Hound. They're great with kids. when someone comes to the door, their bark sounds as big as any dog out there. Plus you won't get in a lawsuit because your dog chewed the neighbors kid up.

Basset hounds can be good family dogs but again have a high propensity for health issues. They all smell, ear infections, high likelihood of spinal issues, potentially wobblers syndrome, eye issues, elbow and hip dysplasia, etc.

Best dog I have ever owned. My hunting companion, tracking dog, no aggression unless she feels like one of us is in harm. Great at deterring people from getting out of their vehicle at my house. She would protect my wife over me and our 2 boys. We got thE runt of the litter, smart, and has a nose like a bloodhound. Rotts love your attention. I have 8 acres at my house, her range is maybe 30-40 yard from the house, she stays close., with one exception, if anyone of us are outside doing anything. She will be right on our side.

I just don’t understand this. Basically they’re great if you dominate the shite out of them from puppyhood because they might kill you when they grow up. Oh, and make sure you don’t have any friends or visitors over, ever. Definitely no animal visitors. And when you walk them, don’t go anywhere near anyone else walking their dog. They’re so ‘protective’ that they’ll eat the face off of anyone (man or beast) that comes near you or your immediate family. Why would anyone want to take on this kind of risk and responsibility unless you live in the wilderness somewhere?

Idk don’t ask me. I’ve seen great family dogs be horrible in social situations. Some owners don’t mind it or care. I could never own a breed or dog like that. But that’s just me.

Lots of breeds are protective of a family. I would be concerned about the ones that may perceive the UPS man as a threat........ and kill him.

Have owned fufu lap dogs, German Shepard’s, mutts, spaniels, chow, lab and currently have a Rottie. My Rottie is by far the best dog I have had. Great with strangers, kids, cats and visitors. If they are socialized at a young age you will have a great dog. Cant recommend enough.

I have a 3 year old male rottweiler, and he's the most laid back and friendly dog I've ever had. He was suppose to be a guide dog but was too social with people. Poor breeding and 80s movies give rottweilers a bad rap. When bred to the correct standards, they are rock solid dogs. Find a breeder that doesn't breed for looks but for temperament. They should have a wait and see attitude. If someone broke in my house when I was gone, my rottweiler would probably welcome them in. But if someone broke in and tried to harm me, he would step in at that point. Von Evman Rottweilers in Florida is a great breeder and follows the German standards for breeding, which focuses on proper temperament.

It's not "papers" that drive the price, a responsible breeder will not only breed registered dogs that meet the breed standard, they also conduct extensive health testing. Insist on it.
Rottweilers should have hip and elbow evaluations (OFA), eye and heart exams by specialists (both required annually), and JLPP screening.
Check out Silverhill Rottweilers in NC. I worked with Cathy 20 years ago, she's committed to the breed.

The rottweilers that my family has have never done anything to people we bring into our house. The key is for them to be socialized, but that's true of ANY dog not just rottweilers.

I don't believe that the 3 rottweilers we've had can all be anomalies, because this is the exact opposite of what I would tell people. Our current one literally shoves his head under people's hands so they can pet him.

We have friends who have one. He is a very sweet dog. If you live where it gets hot, you need to be careful as they overheat more quickly than other dogs. Not a summertime outdoor dog in the south

a lot of members of my family have had them with no issues and tend to be good animals.
in my time in private practice have never had an aggressive one. I'm way more wary of a G. Shepherd than Rots.

This would be a huge concern for me since I always have friends over with their kids and also have all the neighborhood kids at my house playing with my 6 year old
Never had to worry about any of that when I had my boxer. He passed away 3 weeks ago, and I’ve been torn as to whether I want another boxer or not. My last one was PERFECT for what I wanted.
ETA - anyone who has kids and are considering getting a dog should really think about getting a boxer
