our tradition was open gifts at home, spending the day with friends at their house, then traveling the next day or so to see the grandparents.
the year we split up, ex, kids and i did the morning gift opening at our house, then they all went to the friends house for lunch and football...i was not invited.
The next year, for thanksgiving and christmas, i cooked a full spread for dinner and told the kids (16 and 19) to invite all their friends. i never had another alone holiday.

This will be my first ever. Not quite sure how I feel about it yet.
Its all mental baw. Just treat it like a nice day off or regular Sunday and find a way to treat yourself.

Many times. It's no big deal.

Anyone ever spent Christmas alone?
its no big deal as long as you have no family obligations, its nice to be free and do whatever you want with no expectations or things you "have to do"

Seems pretty sad on Christmas.
It’s one of those things where the thought of it is way worse than the reality of it. It’s actually kind of nice being stuck at home not being able to go anywhere because almost every place is closed. So there’s no guilt in being a lazy slob.

Once, due to having the flu. It was very quiet and lonely, but I did pretty much everything you did.

Quiet and relaxing. I spent most of the day on the sofa with a blanket. Movies, video games, eating, sleep, and repeat…all uninterrupted.

Yes. Twice. Me and the dogs. We shared a pumpkin pie, went for a hike, watched football, and relaxed. I really could do it again. If I had been Tom Hanks, I never would’ve left the island.

In the Corps overseas. Chaplain Charlie gave us a pep talk and then we had a magic show at 3pm.
Just kidding about the last two. The chow hall did serve a decent meal for Christmas Day though.

I’ve spent every Christmas alone

I attended boarding school, and I spent several Christmases alone there. For many reasons, mostly my father's disposition, I was not allowed to come home during Christmas break. The place got very quiet as all of my classmates and most of the faculty went home. I spent the time reading the classics.
One of my best memories was the year my sister, Fan, came to take me home just before Christmas. She had talked my father into it. I never spent another day in that school.

I've done it once or twice and rather enjoyed it. Ate a late lunch at the Japanese Hibachi place and drank bourbon all night.

Yes. First year after divorce. Ended up going to the deer camp and was the only hunter there for a day it was glorious.

I spent a Thanksgiving and Christmas away from family when I was building projects out of state. We had a nice Thanksgiving meal that we'd come in and grab when we had a moment away from site that wives brought into the main meeting trailer since we were working, and Christmas I just rented a snowmobile and went riding in the backcountry by myself. Sucks being away from family during a family-centric holiday, but made the most of it and enjoyed myself quite a bit.
