Losing an apartment? Not like losing a home. Are Lincoln apartments in demand like New York? Hell, could set him up in new digs for less than 5K.

I wish i would have said no.
Would have $500 and a friend (maybe. That's not a good sign).

By your own description of his financial situation it sounds like your friend has no clue how to manage money and be responsible about paying his bills.
Also from your description, it sounds like he may have some sort of substance abuse issues because that scenario sounds eerily just like my stepson. He's a damn junkie and owes everybody money, lives hand to mouth and has been financially cut off by his mother and I for a few years now.
His idea of "borrowing money" is-----let me have money and don't expect to be paid back and we don't share that train of thought.
I wouldn't do it, but your decision is up to you and you alone. Think long and hard before forking over cash. If you decide to do it, tell him you want to pay the rent directly yourself and not hand over cash just in case he's scamming you.

Expect to be the very last "bill" he pays every month, if he pays you at all. You can call it a "loan" but in all likelihood, you're giving him the money. If you're not ok with that then you have to say no. If it effects the friendship......that's on him.

We know you don’t have $5,000

about $5000 to not go into eviction
Also, you will no longer be friends if you loan him the money. He won’t pay you back and then will avoid you because he knows he isn’t going to pay you back.
Letting him fail/get evicted, is likely better for him in the long run. Give him a temporary place to stay after he gets evicted and help him with his root problem.

Yeah I had one ask me for money. He was an addict that was supposed to be recovering/sober. I told him no because I suspected he had relapsed, or was trying to get high again. Not sure, but he is currently sober, and has been for a while now. We are still friends.

Chances are the $5k will help, but not for more than a couple of months. A temp solution, nothing more. Will be back to where they are today, you'll be out 5k and a friend soon thereafter.

Don't do it. I did it twice in my younger days and I never heard back again from either of them.
Had one a couple months ago call and ask and remembered the hard lesson I already learned. Nope.

This. If that's close to his monthly expenses and he's that far behind, your $5,000 won't help for long, and he'll either still get evicted or need another $5000 in a few months.
I would just tell him you don't have that kind of money to lend. I would have to have a hell of a lot in cash to consider $5,000 a gift to anyone.

If you loan it, do it with the idea you're giving it.
If you do it once, don't be surprised if you're called on to do it again.
Does your friend have gambling, drug or shopping addictions? What is causing his financial woes? Can you refer him to some financial management help?

If want to give friends or family a large sum of money you have to Kevin O Leary it.
1. I will give you the money no strings attached.
2. You will understand no circumstances ever ask me for money again.

You will lose $5,000 and you will lose a friend if you go through with it. He will never pay you back.
You will keep $5,000 and may lose a friend if you don't go through with it.

Nothing big but I gave a friend $1000 knowing she could not pay me back. She was a friend of my MIL and had medical bills. She always said I’d get it back one day.
3 months later she Apple paid me $1000.
I tried to give it back but she said she’d remember how kind I was to help her out. Tears here.
