Basal cell < Squamous Cell < Melanoma
Basal cell gets cut off but is the least concerning. Squamous cell can metastasize and can be fatal. My uncle died of metastatic SQC. Melanoma is worse than the two but having said that I've know several people who've had melanoma and sometimes reoccurrence but with early detection, no adverse impact. So take SQC seriously. I continually have actinic keratosis removed. The are precursors to SQC. And I've had BCC. Damn sun!

I had a big spot of squamous cell carcinoma sprout up by my temple. They sent me to a plastic surgeon. he got it out, then did the most beautiful stitch work you have ever seen. I have had stitches about 15 times nd he was meticulous.
I can see a scar if I catch it in just the right light, but it is mostly invisible.

Had one cut off me last year. As long as the lab says the margins are good, then you shouldn't have any need for other treatment than the procedure to cut the squamous cell carcinoma out. (Mohs procedure, I think it's called).
As long as you go to your doctor and have your skin checked regularly, it's not that big of a deal. Please do not do as my mother did and ignore what seems like a small thing. She let a spot go for a couple of years and it cost her her life.

It is a mild form of skin cancer. What your dermatologist is going to do is cut that spot out. The reason they do this is to get good margins around that site meaning they will check it to make sure that you have non cancer cells in the spot they originally removed. You will end up with a few stitches after tomorrow and then go back and have them removed in about a week. My dermatologist will usually call me when he gets the report back from the pathologist. I’ve had numerous skin cancer issues ranging from what you’re talking about to multiple melanomas. Good luck tomorrow. If you need to know anything else feel free to ask

This can’t be emphasized strongly enough. It is the best way to ensure all the cancer is reproved with the least loss of healthy tissue, and the least scarring possible. The doc that did mine on my forehead was also a plastic surgeon. This is not the time to screw around with a dermatologist.

For a year I had what I thought was a reoccurring ingrown whisker om my neck about an 1" under my ear. Finally had it checked out and the Dr cut out a 2.5cm diameter piece of skin out almost down to the muscle to remove the SCC. I had fluid build up that needed to be drained for 3 months at the incision. The Dr said I would have been dead in a year if I had continued to ignore it.
Straw hats when I'm fishing or mowing now as well as long sleeve t-shirts.

Sure, but that doesn’t change the fact that the overwhelming majority of Dermatologist are not trained to do Mohs surgery. In my city of over 500,000 people there are exactly two docs trained to do it, and only one is a Dermatologist.

I think he meant to have a plastic surgeon clean up the mess and make it presentable. My MOHS surgeon was a dermatologist and she did a bang up repair job. I had an excision and then in about an hour she called me back in and pared some more off. I'm glad I didn't see the gaping hole. But it looks ok now.

I have a gunshot looking hole in my back from melanoma. Scars are better than death and make up some interesting conversation starters. Keep getting checked.

Had a spot on the bottom of my foot that turned out to be melanoma. Spot was the size of a pencil eraser and about the size of a nickel had to be cut out. Luckily the wife spotted it and I got to it early.

I've seen people let it grow to the point that they end up their eyeball being removed or with tissue from their chest/arm/thigh being used to "fix" the defect. Turns a 4 hour process into a 12 hour surgery and 2 week hospital stay..

There is a new procedure that uses focused radiation. Non invasive, no stitches, etc... Being used on a lot of patients that have various types of skin cancer on their nose. Skin on the nose is hard to match so grafts can really stand out.
The only reason I know about this is because I am about to start the 1st of 5 treatments. They are doing 2 spots on my nose. Treatment will take place weekly and last 5-7 minutes. They will do one spot, re-position, and then do the 2nd spot. No surgery, no stitches, no long recovery times with a bandage on your nose/face.
Effects of treatment are supposed to me like a mild sunburn and will disappear quickly. Cost is close to that of normal surgery by a dermatologist. If the area is in a difficult place and your dermatologist recommends a plastic surgeon for the stitching then it is a wash.
Might want to ask about this treatment as an option. Some insurances cover it and some don't yet. We have Blue Cross Blue Shield and they don't but we will hit our family out of pocket max of $2500. Traditional cut and wait, cut and wait, etc... would still have cost me $1850 out of pocket and I would have to deal with stitches, bandaids, etc... Too busy and too many meetings to schedule around that.

Carcinoma is no joke. Get it taken care of in quick order before it spreads. Go to your dermatolgist on a regular basis to get it checked out, anything comes out as melanoma, might be worth a trip to MD Anderson to look for spreading to any non skin locations.
