I thought this randomly the other day

I can’t stand the pretentiousness of it all

I usually leave hungrier than when I walked in

And it’s so damn expensive too.

It’s not for me. Call me uncultured . I don’t care

These days, if you want quality food and service, you have to go fine dining. Otherwise, you get food warmed up in a plastic bag in a microwave, served by teenagers and former teen moms who don't give a rat's arse about you.

Everything has its place. I like most types of dining for the most part, as long as they are doing it well and adapt with the times when necessary. The ones I probably like the least are the places that pretend to be fine dining but aren't, or the places that have been the same shite for 70 years to where they are still getting the same frozen crap to serve

When it comes to find dining while traveling, I often prefer to go to a particular chef's "2nd or 3rd" restaurant, their bistro etc as opposed to their flagship restaurant.

You get excellent food but in a more relaxed environment.

I just don’t want to pay that much money for food.

I'm not big on it either. Getting all fancied up and paying way too much for food isn't my cup of tea.

I feel the same. I can get two weeks worth of groceries for what a meal and a couple cocktails each at a good steak house will cost.

The last time the wife and I went to Ruth's Chris it was close to $200 out the door----tip included.

Steakhouses to me are never worth it unless someone else is paying. If someone else is paying I love it.

But otherwise...its a steak. They aren't making an avocado foam or a balloon out of sugar

Its steak, its expensive, and it tastes great but its rarely that far off from what one could do at home.

There was a period of my life where my wife and sought out Michelin style restaurants as our entertainment, but while well-crafted and artful, it loses its luster and in the end I found that I really prefer cheap food with character, mom and pop joints, local places, food trucks, even just a ballpark hotdog and cheap beer.

If it’s the type of place that gives you a large dish where the food takes up 1/8 of the space and there is ample garnish and a sauce drizzled in some dumb design - hard pass.

Most people who regularly "fine dine" don’t consider steakhouses to fall into that category. Preparing a good steak is relatively straightforward.

Fine dining is about creativity and craft with high quality ingredients and an attentive waitstaff. When you sit at a chef’s table or in a true chef's restaurant and watch a professional construct dishes, you realize you don't know shite about food.

This is me. I don’t even know what is considered “fine dining” in today’s world. Many very good (and expensive) restaurants still have a casual flair.

The last time we went to a fine dining restaurant (ironed white tablecloths and ironed and folded LINEN napkins ) (and the silverware you'd expect where it should be), at the next table the husband was loudly talking business on his phone and the wife was just reading her phone.

Then there was the time I almost choked on 1/3 of my Wagu steak, a piece 1"x1/2"x1/2".

Give me a good steakhouse with awesome sides, good service, good atmosphere, and a good bourbon selection over some nothing but fried food place any day.

Yeah, I couldn’t tell you the last time I ordered steak at a restaurant. I buy high quality beef and cook steak once a week at home. In general, when I’m at a restaurant I’m ordering something that I can’t cook at home (or something I at least don’t cook often at home).

I know what you are getting at but thats actually my point.

If a steak from costco cost 12.99 and a steak from a steakhouse cost 80, its simply not 6X better. And even if it was, i dont value that multiple that much.

Presumably you are buying nice cuts of meat as that is a large part of why good steakhouses cook good steaks, they source high quality meat.
