Anyone care to shed some light on how athletes are paid/how their contracts work?

We all see basically the year/dollar amount in the news but I don't really know any of the details of how it all shakes down. Are they paid as salaried employees or contractors? Are there taxes based on where there team is located or on each place the game is played? What about players who play in the minors (MLB/NHL) for a time or go back and forth?
I'm just curious because I've never really thought about how it actually ends up coming to them. Any info anyone would want to share would be interesting and appreciated.

Salaried.

Part on where located, part on where games played. Depends on how the salaries are structured. Bonus vs. salary. Basically, if you play a game in California, you pay California taxes on it.

NFL contracts are not worth the paper they are signed on

Andrew McCutchen posted his game check a couple of seasons ago, you can kinda see how it is broken down.

You'll hear them talking about game checks in the NFL. Does that mean FA who get cut before the season don't get paid anything?

Looks like you can see where they played games in that two week stretch based on the taxes from different cities/states.

I know they get paid weekly during the season...i would think you divide their contract by games played to figure out weekly check.

musicians are paid similarly (but slightly less $$$). if you play bass for tracey lawrence in Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana, you pay tax in each state based on the pay received for the gigs in that state.

That has to suck for the person filing taxes in all those states

It's really fricking complicated.

Depends on how their contract is structured. If there is guaranteed money in the contract, that's typically theirs whether they ever set foot on a practice field or not, as long as they meet the terms of their contract in good faith. So, the contract will almost always be written to protect the team so the player can't sign the contract and say 'frick you, I ain't showing up' and still get the guaranteed money, but it will also usually have language protecting the player saying that if the player is injured or can't perform for reasons out of their control (i.e. the team makes the choice to release them), they still get their guaranteed money. There will also usually be a chunk of the contract that's specifically for pay during preseason/camps/etc. that a FA will have so the team can pay them one rate for their time during camp and cut them within the terms of their contract without having to pay them the higher rate they'd generally command if they make the final squad.
The rest of their contract that isn't guaranteed money or preseason money is generally split up evenly and paid out weekly throughout the season or on a per-game basis, again, subject to how the contract says they'll be paid.
There also may be completion bonuses that only are paid if they meet the terms of the contract for reaching those. For instance, a running back may negotiate a bonus for meeting a certain yardage goal for the season or number of touchdowns, and if they hit that goal, they get the bonus.
Again, all of this is negotiated on a case-by-case basis between the player and the team within the confines of the league's rules, team rules, NFLPA collective bargaining agreements, etc.
There's a lot of moving parts and a lot of contractual shite that all blends together to end up with a player's compensation. The answer is a solid "It depends".
