You lose out on rebates and other discounts if you take the 0%

When I was a HS student, my aunt passed down a Toyota Corona (‘74 or ‘78.) it had over 120k Miles on it but I drove it for 4 years. I worked at Winn Dixie to pay the insurance and fuel plus repairs.
My younger self was ungrateful though because one night I drove the car with little oil in it and a burnt the engine up as I exited Acadian In BR. My dad was fricking pissed that I was so irresponsible. I should have had the oil changed but I kept putting it off.
After graduating college, I bought a Toyota Tercel in Feb of 1994. It was a stick shift but that’s what I could afford. I took such good care of that car because it was new and I was having to pay the monthly notes. That Tercel’s clutch went out ten years later but I drove it 245 k miles.
The last Toyota Corolla I had also lasted 10 years and 281k Miles. Never missed an oil change or maintenance. I treated those cars with respect and they kept me on the road.

Thinking about it, but then I would have to sell my 2002 Tundra. The only thing wrong is the drivers upholstery, small crack in the windshield, an occasional infestation by ants, a slight smell my wife attributed to my golf shoes, dents in the bed from throwing 16 inch diameter logs from 30', from a tree that fell on the roof and some tiny rust spots from an a-hole rufous sided towhee that kept pecking on the hood and shitting on the mirror.
BTW, that bird, I caught him in a have-a-heart trap transported him 5 miles away. a-hole showed up three days later. Reminds me of some of the posters on this site.
Honestly, do I want a new truck, no, because the one I have works just fine.

I would lease a car for a high schooler. The payments are low, if it’s wrecked, t doesn’t affect residual. She can save up to buy her own car when the lease is up or take over payments on the lease. You have a warranty for the duration of the lease as well as roadside assistance free of charge.

Get your kid an early to mid 2000s manual Jeep Wrangler. They are slow as Christmas so speeding won't be much of an issue.

I understand what you’re saying and I agree with it. But that mentality is not for everyone.
Sure, it’s great if you have cash and can invest it instead of spending it. But if you’re financing for 7 years so that you can afford the vehicle, it’s a terrible financial decision.
Considering that the OP said he didn’t want to buy used because financing sucks, and that the other option he threw out there was a 3 year lease on a Kia, I’m guessing (but could be wrong) that he falls into the latter category. I’m not saying everyone should be able to pay cash for every vehicle they buy. But I am saying that you should be able to pay cash for any vehicle you buy a teenager, and if you can’t you should be financing the cheapest thing you can find.
Lastly, I’d argue that a better way to set a good example of money management is: buy a cheap used car with cash, open an account with a brokerage, take whatever you would have spent on a monthly note and dollar cost average into the account. Then you can gift it to her whenever she graduates HS or college.

Thanks for all your Responses , I’m learning lots.
I last purchased a new vehicle at a dealership after Katrina in 2006.
Currently in the garage are 2 SUVs : a 2007 and a 2013 which we maintain meticulously and hope they give us plenty more life going forward.
Again thanks , I really do appreciate the passion that most of you have put into your responses.

has little to do with new car or not. VERY LITTLE.
If the value is relative, I agree, but what new car [financed] can you buy for $5K and only carry liability?

I remember my younger days , when you wanted to purchase a used car , you’d pick up the latest news on wheels at a time saver.
Does anyone have experience with car max, Carvana, vroom, or autonation??
After reading all the responses, leaning towards a used car.

Based on the patterns and mistakes of many teen drivers, save yourself a wad of cash and look for a dependable used car. You, and your wallet, will be happier for it.
Hell, just give the kid a $5k gift certificate for Uber, then act confused when they're pissed off.

With Hertz going bankruptcy, read they are expecting the used car market to take a big hit, over the next 8-10 weeks.

What did you buy? We’re looking at an Avalon and so far the dealers are not moving much off the MSRP. But, the inventory is low because the plant is shut down, or so I have been told.
We were told the same thing about Tacoma’s. The dealer we went to had none on the lot and didn’t seem interested in getting one. Promises promises. Not even a call back.
I ended up getting a 2018 SR5 4x4 V6 with 40k from a dealer in Hattiesburg. It’s like new and I am very pleased.
They aren’t moving on new ones supposedly due to very low supply.

Just bought my daughter a Malibu last week. I like it but the mpg isn't as good as I expected it to be.

When I bought my Tacoma the dealer never found me one, even with $500 down payment. Had to call one on the other side of Mobile in Alabama.

If you want cheap, but a 1.5 gen nissan xterra.
Hall all of the hoses changed, belts, timing belt, water pump, valve cover gaskets and knock sensor under the intake.
It'll be under 4500 bucks and is good for 300k miles.

I went to the local dealer and not interested. I was searching from Houston to Birmingham. There weren’t many out there without a ton of miles or pretty sticker. You would think the dealers would want the business right now with all that’s going on.
