My daughter bought a a Jeep Sahara. They had some good incentives like employee pricing, low interest and a “hero’s discount” for being a nurse. I told her to wait a month or two but she succumbed to the new car fever.

A new car for a high schooler is insane
No way I would ever do that even if I could afford it

she wants to keep trucking with her what, 9 year old miniSUV by now. Whatever.
Evidence that you should be very thankful for her. She has sense

Bought a used truck on A Friday and the corona pandemic hit on Saturday.
Got a good deal so I’m not mad.
When I was in HS I drove my grandfathers 67 chevy C10 with 3 on the tree. My parents bought me a new single cab Ford ranger my senior year and I drove the hell out of it for 4 years until I bought a mustang in 98.
I’d buy my kids a new car but it would be a base model Corolla, accord, or equivalent.

So yes you’re right but if I get her a 5-6 year old sedan, financing will suck as there are zero deals to be had.
Pay Cash.

I would argue that buying a new car for a teen (who, in all likeness, will get in a wreck in the first two years of driving) is better than buying the $5k beater.
When you wreck a $5k beater, you’re only option is to drive it wrecked, pay to get it fixed or let the insurance company total it and take the ACV minus your deductible. Also, your paying for mechanical repairs and maintenance to keep the beater on the road.
A new car, when wrecked, won’t total in a minor collision and mechanical repairs are covered under warranty. I think Kia (and some other car companies) still has 100k mile factory warranties. Some dealers are offering free oil changes too.

Going pick up a new Ram for one of my crews this morning.
Unfortunately, I only financed it for 3 years.

Instead of buying them a used car, I would give them either my wife's car or my car and buy a new one for Mom or Dad.
They would be more inclined to take care of it if it was in the family beforehand. I take care of my cars religiously. Although not certain, they would be less inclined to trash it.
Speaking from experience on how I was raised.
I was given a new car senior year of college. I felt the appreciation of earning it. I babied it throughout grad school and afterward. Had it for 11 years.

What did you buy? We’re looking at an Avalon and so far the dealers are not moving much off the MSRP. But, the inventory is low because the plant is shut down, or so I have been told.

We lost several cars in 2016, I needed a car to basically get around quick. I leased a base Rav4 for less than $200 a month. 4 Months in, it became one my high school kid's car, other than an accident that wasn't their fault with a drunk hit and runner, not a single issue. Is that the case with all kids, no, but if they are respectful, and even more fearful of you if they tear it up, it can work.

I would say something around $5k or less.
The people who say this typically have no idea what a 5k car is in the year 2020.

Yes, I just purchased a truck. The times have meant nothing as prices/deals go from what I found.
