I saw a night time SpaceX launch 2 years ago from Port Canaveral hotel. It was incredible to see. Can't imagine how Artemis is going to be since it is much bigger than the Starlink rocket I saw.

Saw a launch from Merritt Island while visiting. Spectacular and very memorable.

On the spur of the moment my parents drove us down to see the first Columbia launch (STS-1). We got as far south as Daytona before the crowds got overwhelming and hotels were booked. Watched the launch from the beach. All you could really see was the flame from the engines and the vapor plume, and heard the sonic boom. Still a cool memory and to say you saw it.
I had a great aunt that lived in Cocoa, and we went to visit her in the summer of '94. There was a shuttle launch scheduled for 8 or 9 am the morning we were heading home. We checked out of our hotel around 4 in the morning, drove up US 1 towards Titusville and paid $10 to park in a vacant lot on the west bank of the Indian River. Beautiful view of the VAB and the shuttle lit up on LC-39. Sunrise was amazing, weather was perfect, countdown was normal until T-3 seconds when the shuttle main engines started to ignite. Computers registered a fuel flow issue and shut everything down, scrubbed the launch. We got in the car and drove back to Atlanta.

I watched a night launch and land from Jetty Park. I absolutely loved it.. Very cool experience seeing the booster turn around and come back at you.
The press conference yesterday said 80% change of a going forward with that launch, but 8 hours is a lot. Maybe get a backup plan of disney for a day if it falls through.

My son wants to see the Artemis launch on the 1st. It’s an 8 hour trip and I thought this would be a good bonding trip.

At one time there was a campground to the west of the launch site. On spring break we planned to go there for the launch. Our test opening even faced the launch pad across the water.
It didn't happen. That launch was postponed so many times we were back at our University before it happened.

Yes. I’ve seen the space shuttle and a rocket go up. Incredible experience and highly recommend. The pregame is great if it’s an afternoon or evening launch. Huge tailgating atmosphere. Some people blaring music, others streaming NASA radio.

I went but the launch got cancelled last minute.

Saw about 17 shuttle launches from three miles away on base when I worked there. Also quite a few rocket launches, Delta 2's and Titan 3 and 4.

No, but I did see this cool sight last year while road cruising for snakes up an Arizona mountain. I was driving the road up one side of the mountain, then came around a curve and was met with this…
SpaceX launch.
SpaceX launch.

I watched a rocket test at Marshall from a quarter mile away, back in the 90s.
It was like a rock concert, a drag race, an earthquake and fireworks show all at once.

I was at the last night launch of the shuttle program in 2008/2009.
Coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

Hate to rain on your parade but you really shouldn’t plan out the details for a trip 2 days before it.
The closest you can get is around 3 miles, but seating is very limited so you have to plan far in advance (months). Next closest is at Kennedy space center at 8 miles. Unlike the shuttle, I don’t think you have a direct view to the Artemis pad.
None of that matters though because all tickets to either have sold out. So the best you can do is park along roads or parks in the surrounding area (11 miles+)
Regardless for either, traffic is very heavy and you’ll want to show up 3-4 hours in advance. Make a picnic out of it. It’s not too dissimilar to Mardi Gras where if you want a good spot you have to come in early to claim it.
One thing to be aware of with these trips though is you never know when something will come up to postpone the launch, either from a technical glitch on the ship or weather conditions they don’t like.

Mostly posting this for anyone considering it in the future (as I can't check to see if passes for the 1st are sold out)
I've only seen one but I really enjoyed the experience. I went to"
Jetty Park Beach, Campground, and Fishing Pier, 100 Jetty Park Dr, Port Canaveral, FL 32920, United States, which the internet says is only 1 mile to the pad.
The park was great. Got out there early. Had some sandwiches and a few drinks. Talked to some people. As it get closer to the launch everyone begins walking to the beach or down the fishing pier. It gets pretty crowded so you may want to move onto the pier early and sit down/bring a chair.

Yeah, having lived in the area four times in my life, I have seen hundreds of launches consisting of every vehicle launched from Canaveral/KSC.
First one I remember was 1956 or 57 - my dad was a NASA contractor before there was a NASA. Saw several explode on the pad or just after lift-off.
Saw all of the manned vehicles - Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Shuttle, and saw Artemis I & will see Artemis II Wednesday (hopefully) - have direct line-of-sight of the pad from my balcony.
I'm also a NASA contractor and supported the first and last Shuttle flights and a lot in between - watched Challenger from the VAB - ugh.
I get to watch SpaceX launch all the time - which has become routine EXCEPT when they land the booster(s) back at the Cape - like watching science fiction.
And ULA launches (Delta, Atlas) and Blue Origin has launched a couple.
Absolutely go see the launch but as others have said, there are frequent scrubs up to the second liftoff is scheduled so prepare mentally for disappointment.
And Brevard County is already buzzing - huge crowds are coming in - some estimates are 400k-500k+ visitors by Wednesday.

Jetty park is a popular unofficial spot.
But it’s not a mile. Artemis launches from LC-39B, far to the north on the other side of the Space Force base. There are pads (mostly inactive) a mile from the Jetty, but -39B is a little over 12 miles away.

I have. On a spring break we watched a launch from 20 minutes away.

Hadn't thought of that. I was thinking of going to Canaveral National Seashore, which is the closest road north of the pad, and seeing how far south we could go.

That one seems better.
One additional consideration though is wherever you go, you need to go early, and there’s bathroom considerations with the kiddo. Especially if he’s too young for you to be ok with him going by himself.
Another angle that probably not viable but it’s worth considering: renting a boat and catching it off shore. You’ll probably be banned from being directly eastward of the pad (debris field for an accident. It’s why that specific spot is used for America’s primary spaceport )

I went to the first Space Shuttle launch has a kid. Even back then, it was an insane traffic jam. The trip from Gainesville took well over 24 hours.

Watched a shuttle launch from the causeway in KSC. It’s worth it if you can go. It’s about 7 miles from the pad.
