I have friends here that are from Quito

In grad school at LSU we went on a 15 day trip to Ecuador and it was one of the most fun experiences of my life. We did "school shite" for like the first four mornings (which amounted to not much of anything) and then the rest of the time was filled with fun shite. Mountain biking in the mountains, white water rafting on the Blanco River, going to market and haggling prices in Spanish, snorkeling around the Galapagos Islands and hiking them too (saw tons of blue-footed boobies), salsa lessons, dance parties at local night clubs, visited the hot springs, horseback riding in the hills where they raise bullfighting bulls, etc.

Not sure I would want to live there, but it was fricking awesome.

I knew some people who came here from the capital and they have nothing but bad things to say about it.

My wife is from Ecuador. Her family came to the states from Quito when she was 2. I don’t hear them ever say anything good about the government over there. Beautiful place otherwise.

I have been there twice. Beautiful country and very nice people. There are some extremely poor and dangerous places but they are pretty easy to avoid.

Beautiful country but very poor. If you’re a naturalist you’ll love Ecuador. I spent a week there about 8 years. Quito is the capital and it’s a typical big city. If I moved there I’d probably avoid living in Quito. Learn Spanish. Very little English was spoken in the places I’ve visited.

There used to be a strong shortwave station from Quito that played good music. I haven’t listened to shortwave radio for music in more than 20 years, so I don’t know if Quito still exists.

Guayaquil would seem to be an easy and enjoyable fit for any of us living on the gulf coast.

Awesome seafood and it’s hot and humid. Perfect.

Quito’s elevation is about 10,000 feet. I’ve known a few people that have visited, and they all say it takes some adjustment.

If you have heart issues, this can be a problem. I visited Silverton, CO a couple years ago and it’s right at 10,000 feet. Just walking across the street was difficult. I felt like a fish out of water. Thankfully we didn’t stay long.

I think some seafood dealers import shrimp from there as it's a high quality than gulf shrimp. The Japanese buy a lot of shrimp to be eaten raw from here bc of the quality. That's all I got.

I would really appreciate it. Has more to do with school and day-to-day life, including sports. TIA

Cuenca is the stereotypical small colonial town, and very popular tourist destination. Located in between the mountains and the coast.

My daughter and SIL retired a few months ago to live in Cuenca. They love it so far (although SIL does have a few reservations about being so far from NOLA family).

My daughter has sent me videos of this area - it's almost like a small European city with shops, restaurants and apartments around cobblestone streets.

My daughter works some from home and says excellent internet service.

Good deal. I’ve heard (and seen pictures) that Cuenca has a mini French Quarter feel to it.

She's been looking at retirement areas for several year and has visited Costa Rica and Panama. She (and her husband, I guess) fell in love with this area.
