Long story short, I went to renew my DL last Friday at a private OMV in Lafayette and in the process of putting in info, the woman said there was some issue with my license and she couldn't renew it and I needed to call the state OMV. She implied it was an issue with my insurance, but I contacted them and there's never been an issue...so who knows. I have no clue here.

But I've called and emailed the state over and over and they don't even PRETEND to pick up the phones. Everything gets routed through one number, and when you click the option dealing with this issue you get the joy of leaving a message in hopes they call back.

Anyone dealt with this horseshite, and is there some secret code I need to get a live person or actual help?

Yes...I know it's Louisiana and I expect this kind of stuff, but holy hell.

Suggestions?

I had an issue with my insurance as well and I called my insurance agent and they sent over some kind of form to the DMV and it was cleared up by my agent. I didn’t have to deal with the DMV at all

You're right...I'm not.

It's states plainly that this can not be handled at a local office and can only be done through this telephone number or email...but hey, thanks for the help.

Reinstatement services are not available at OMV field offices.

Reinstatements will ONLY be provided via the Contact Us link at the bottom of this page, by phone, by mail or by a Public Tag Agency utilizing one of the following options:

1- OMV Call Center: 225-925-6146 – Option No. 3
2- OMV Mail Center: P.O. Box 64886 Baton Rouge, La. 70896
3- Public Tag Agency (PTA): Contact your local PTA to ensure they provide the reinstatement service you need.

FYI, a PTA is the first place I went and told me there was an issue they could not deal with.

Did you know there was an actual issue? As far as I know, there is none other than what the chick at the office implied. And when I contacted the insurance company, they said they had no issues ever on their end.

the ONLY thing we can think of is that we sold a vehicle through Give Me The Vin last year and after a few weeks had gotten a letter from the state saying we had an uninsured vehicle, which we didn't, so we mailed them what they said they needed and never heard back...no emailed or mailed receipt. Nothing.

Let me guess, you got a flag and penalty for a lapse in insurance on a vehicle?

We got a notification from the state last week for an insurance lapse penalty on a vehicle that was traded in in January of 2019, so nearly 4.5 years later. We can't get anyone on the phone to clear it up so we'll likely have to take time out of our day to go to the DMV and prove the vehicle was sold. I hate this state.

She was unclear, but yeah...this is what it seems like.

See...this is what I'm thinking our issue was as well and what we'd taken care of nearly 18 months ago by mailing them EXACTLY what they asked for. As for going to the DMV, as far as I can tell, they can't/won't handle anything there...at least based on the info on the webpage I posted above.

It's the only thing that's even possible. I still have all the paperwork we mailed them, obviously, but I can't even get anyone to let me know officially what they want or how to clear it up.

Was hoping someone may have had some backdoor number or something.

My DL is going to expire in 7 days, and I'll be in freakin' Yellowstone beginning the 5th, so that'll be fun with an expired DL.

After the sale did you turn in your plate or did you cancel it online?

Not all PTA's are the same. Family member had the exact same issue, went to one PTA who couldn't do it and then another that had him in and out in 15 minutes. He did however just pay the fine instead of trying to rectify the situation.

Spent four hours sitting in a queue at the OMV last week... Finally got to the front of the line and the lady was a complete bitch. Guess they felt they needed to hit all of the stereotypes.

This. I had an issue with an insurance flag. I was actually double insured based on changing the coverage for my daughter's vehicle but the state picked it up as a cancellation. Never not had insurance in my life.

Went to several places that could or would not help. Finally found one that would and they were awesome (in Metry, now closed unfortunately).

I ended up paying the fine too because it was just too much of a hassle. So I paid double insurance on a vehicle, then paid the state a fine for double insuring a vehicle. Mafia shite.

Try the Facebook page. Someone told me they sometimes respond to posts like this one on that page or you can try messaging them. They post there quite a bit apparently.

You have to pay to check your DL status online, but that may tell you if there's something on your record.

Short of that, I suppose you could try sending a certified letter to the Commissioner.

Is there a way to schedule an appointment with the State OMV? I'd just go ahead and schedule an appt ASAP to try and get in front of someone. Have your insurance agent send you the notice of when the insurance was cancelled, bring the information showing when you turned the plate in, and when you sold the car. You may have turned the plate into the people who bought the car, but I'd bring all 3 documents with you.

As far as being out of town, bring your passport if you have one. Wont' help if you need to rent a car, but may just have to put the car in someone else's name that is with you.

You can likely pay the fine off at a local DMV. We had a BS fine a few years ago and there was literally no way to talk to anyone to dispute it so we just paid it.

Something similar is happening to us right now. Changed insurance companies and purposely overlapped them by a week so it couldn’t even be questioned that we had a lapse. First insurer, Allstate, turned us in for cancellation. I got the letter in the mail about suspended license so I turned in all of the paperwork by mail. They still flagged our licenses. Can’t get anyone on the phone. The incompetency with this department makes it near impossible to switch insurance companies without having to go through a bunch of BS and pay fines.

On a good note, there is a title company in Covington that renews licenses and clears up flags with little to no wait. I’m going there tomorrow. They are really easy to deal with. Perhaps there is some place close to where you live that does the same.
