use his safety razor which is possibly 50 years old if I had to guess. There is something really cool about shaving with his razor. He lived to be 95 and still drove and had girlfriends. Hoping it brings me such luck.
If it's a Gillette I can tell you.
I am ate up with this vintage razor bullshite. Lol

Once you start using a safety razor you won't go back to that multi-blade disposable junk.

I started about 4 years ago thanks to a thread on this site. Lol. It can easily become an obsession. You can go crazy trying all the different types of blades and creams. I settled on Taylor of Old Bond Street sandalwood scent and feather blades. I got a 100pack off Amazon and will be set for years.

My recent change to my process is to eliminate using a mug or lather bowl. I wet my face, dip the brush in the soap and then let my scruffy face build the lather. Way faster and less mess.

when guys get really into all these pre-shave oils, super fancy-sounding creams/soaps, and then the post-shave balms, they are making it very complicated
Pre and post shaves, you are right. But the fancy soaps are what I will keep forever. You can get outrageous in price but really you can stop at Proraso or Taylor of Old Bond Street or Trumpers at price point.
Proraso green is as slick as owl shite. The rare times I cheat and use my Schick hydro with it, it gets annoyingly slick. The stuff strings like cheese. Takes about two rinses to get it all off too

I'm very interested in start to shave like this. Where would be a good place to start?
I've been using a merkur HD for 3 or 4 years. Finally got my wife a handle this year after she started using mine exclusively instead of her old razor. We both use Astra blades, I think.
Badger and Blade is a great message board also.

I moved back to a brush and Williams shaving soap 25 years ago. I love the hot brush and it is much cheaper than buying shaving cream.
I moved back to the old double edge razors two or three years ago and love it too.
I buy the feather blades from Amazon. A 100 count box last me over a year.

I started wet shaving a couple of years ago. I absolutely love it. Merkur handle, Feather blade, Hudson Made soap and a badger brush by a local guy Leo Frilot.

How long does it take to get comfortable shaving with one that you aren't afraid of slitting your throat?
Been using a DE razor (Gillette Fat Boy adjustable and black handle slim adjustable from Ebay) for about four years now. I will never go back to expensive multi-razors that give a horrible shave. I use Proraso shaving cream with either Derby Extra or Feather blades. When starting out with DE razor, you must respect the blade or you will look like you were on the losing end of a knife fight. Saying that, I would not suggest Feather blades for a beginner.

It's not that bad, it took just a few shaves for me coming from an electric razor. I still nick myself every once in a while, but it's far far less than when I tried a multi blade razor.

I use a Merkur with Feather blades. It's the real deal.

I shave in the shower right before I get out. I use these cheapies. Im wet and my whiskers are soft. NO creams or oils. Does that count?

Very tempted! That's basically what my Dad used. As a teenager, my mom insisted that I shave before going somewhere. Took a huge chunk out of chin. I'm so used to the Gillette 4 blade vibrating method. 2 questions, how hard is it to not nick your face. Can you shave down, then shave up for the clean shave?

Check out nick shaves YouTube channel. He has a really good introductory series going over the basic supplies and techniques you'll need. He also has a whole bunch of reviews for different soaps and razors and all that.

you guys are speaking a foreign language. I have been using the same handle for 20 years. These are the blades I use too, one lasts' me a week.
If I can be saving money using a different kind, please let me know. It takes me about 1.5 minutes to shave clean every morn. Just warm water, no soap. I have relatively thick facial hair.
