I don't hate BR but I will say that if it weren't for work, I would with 100% certainty not live here.

Is Baton Rouge a shining beacon of what a mid-size city should be? No.

But my life in BR is pretty great. Great jobs, great day-to-day routine, kid in a great school, I don't get caught in interstate commute, great house, plenty to do and eat (despite what people say), etc. It'll be that way for a little while longer until my inevitable move somewhere else. Then, I'll love my life wherever that takes me.

Or I could let all the ancillary shite ruin my life and cause me to hate my surroundings and post about it on a message board, but life's too short to be so miserable.

Hell, I frequent Houston, and Salt Lake City and Park City, UT, and I know people that complain about their lives there. Heaven on earth for many, but not for others.

So a city that got a ton of migrants from Nola after the hurricane, and was built for a much smaller population, now has the same problems as nola w/out the charm? Yeah crazy to think the most famous southern city in the superpower of the world may have a little more culture and history than Baton Rouge. Nuts right?

frick Nola has about 400k more in their metro area with 2 major professional sports franchises. Comparing the two is just idiotic.

I've lived in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Houston. you will find that most folks who have not lived in these cities do not think very highly of them. I've always felt the need to defend these places because of the misconceptions of each place.
I'm not saying this to bash BR, but I've never been able to come up with any solid defense for living there. Family is technically a reason, and inertia, but that can be applied to any city in America. Outside of that it's very difficult.

I don't hate BR, but it has a lot of flaws, a LOT of flaws. I actually love the place and want to see it succeed and improve, but so much of it is terrible that it's easy to forget everything that's good about it.

You can avoid Houston traffic. And it moves. BR traffic is the worst. And its unavoidable.

Moved to Houston about a year ago. Got to where I couldnt stand BR anymore. Got bored with restaurants and nightlife, frustrated with the infrastructure and fed up with the politics. Life to me is much better in Houston. I miss some friends in BR and I miss BR during LSU football and baseball seasons sometimes.

Dude, I hate to break it to you, but that happened 20 years ago in Gardere.

Valley Park has been black for as long as anyone can remember.

Since Gustav, minorities (not necessarily black) have been pouring into Sherwood Forest, Staring Lane, and all around Old Hammond. Driving down Old Hammond from Millerville to Airline since the flood looks straight up depressing.

The dam broke.

With that being said, there was much to be optimistic about BR prior to this summer. The city actually handled the shootings fairly well, all things considered. The flood was a complete disaster, although the citizens handled it about as well as could be expected of them. The election of SWB wasn't even that bad...until she brought on Denise Marcelle and Gary Chambers as advisors.

I fear everything good about BR (libraries, parks, downtown, Garden District, LSU Lakes, economy, ect) is about to be swept away by even worsening crime, bursting of the TOPS Bubble by the legislature bursting the real estate bubble by LSU, social unrest, and regressive politics.

12 Straight years of rebuilding, revitalizing, and progress will disappear in the blink of an eye. It's pretty depressing to watch.

Just the traffic c/w gridlock in some places and the pothole riddled older roads.

yes. I don't deny traffic is bad in Houston, but consider the amount of people moving around compared to BR. consider the infrastructure, and options one has if traffic is bad in Houston. In BR, given the limited options of places to go and routes to get there, you are stuck on I10/12. In Houston, you have a loop, another loop, another loop (Grand PKWY) not to mention surface streets, service roads. Unless you are going to a specific event (Texans game, Livestock show/rodeo) you can pretty much find a good restaurant, movie theater, shopping center close by. Compare that to having to go to Siegen to get to Lowes.

It's also nearly 70 feet above sea level. You can't say that about New Orleans.

It's true that there are a lot of cities with worse traffic than BR, but most of those have 10 times as many people living there. I have never been to a city with worse traffic per capita than Baton Rouge.

Its Shreveport but Shreveport has a loop and traffic flows. And the traffic was bad BEFORE Katrina in BR.

Move State Gov and LSU to New Orleans and watch it die.

Uh... No shite? I've never understood this argument. LSU and the state gov't ARE in BR, so I'm not sure what this proves exactly. It's like saying "take tourism away from NOLA and watch it die".
