Move away. Things are not always better somewhere else. It took me moving away to appreciate Baton Rouge and south Louisiana.

Exactly. Take out Mardi Gras or its long history.

Developers run roughshod in BR/EBR. New subdivisions are popping in the same areas where older subdivisions were under water just a few months back.

I love Baton Rouge as well.

I hate that there isn't a lot of good white collar jobs for young people here outside of the engineering field. Same problem in New Orleans.

maybe so but I think a 20-30 minute commute is better than an hour commute any day

My commute home is from Port Allen to Essen and with no traffic takes about 13 minutes...horrible traffic 25-30 min. I don't think that is that bad.

Houston? Traffic there makes traffic in B.R. look like small town USA. There are times when the whole I-10 system is grid locked. Take a trip to the Galleria on any wkend. You will think you are in Mexico & you better learn Spanish as that is almost mandatory in more & more jobs there now.

Actually, I hope this new mayor (whom I didn't vote for), pushes for development (housing) in North BR. Why? Because ironically, it would improve my quality of life in SE Baton Rouge!

You can give them shiny toys but they'll just destroy it as quickly as you build it. Culcha.

When I was younger I held a higher regard for BR and thought often of moving back.

Not so much anymore.

There's no reason why a city the size of Baton Rouge consistently has such bad traffic. I've had it take me over two hours to get from the old bridge to my house in Woodlawn during rush hour. I can understand delays, but not two hour's worth.

My dad lives in Pollard Estates and I hate to go to his house after work. It's not unusual for the traffic to be backed up from College/Lee all the way to Pollard Parkway. We won't even discuss Essen Lane or College Drive.

She's no Kip Holden. She's the type that would want redevelopment in NBR.

Exactly. She's the type who thinks NBR doesn't get its fair share of the tax dollars, despite the fact that they easily get back double what any SBR resident receives. She also doesn't believe it's their own fault NBR looks like a third world nation.

Traffic on I-24 there can be terrible during rush hour, and some holidays, and there is no bypass to get around it.

Yeah there is. This city wasnt built to hold what is approaching nearly 1 million in the metro area.

Nola Metro area was defined in 1950 so lets look at those numbers

Nola 1950: 685k
BR 1950: 375

Nola 2015: 1.2
BR 2015: 830

quote:

In the 1950s and 1960s, Baton Rouge experienced a boom in the petrochemical industry, causing the city to expand away from the original center.

A building boom that began in the 1990s continued into the 2000s, during which Baton Rouge was one of the fastest-growing cities in the South in terms of technology,[24] and Metropolitan Baton Rouge was one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. (under 1 million), with 602,894 in 2000 and 802,484 people as of the 2010 census.[25] Baton Rouge's population temporarily surged after Hurricane Katrina (2005), as it accepted as many as 200,000 displaced residents.

So yeah the city wasnt built to handle all of the people that started moving here.

I like BR. I came here for LSU and except for a few years in Texas, I have been here since. I hate the traffic but other than that, I love my neighborhood, love being able to go to any LSU sporting event I want, love my church, like being a few hours away from parents and extended family. So, it's fine with me. That being said, the past year has been tough with the riots, police shootings, floods and I am very concerned about the new mayor who I think is going to be a disaster. In general, I think you can choose to be miserable wherever you live.
