Switched to new dentist and went yesterday for first time. Was little pissed when she said I needed to get a deep cleaning on a couple of teeth due to gum measurement of 5 on them. They wouldn't even do the regular cleaning until I decided if I wanted to do the deep cleaning. I go to the dentist every 6 months, and the previous dentist never mentioned anything like this. Then she said I had a tooth that had root canal before that had something wrong with the root and will probably need to be re-done Have any of you had the deep cleaning? How painful is it?

deep cleaning

I'm starting to think this is a new dental scam. I've heard of more people "needing" this in the last two years, myself included, than ever before. Been going to the dentist every 6 months for 30+ years without even a cavity. Starting about 2 years ago, it's pockets this, pockets that after my old dentist retired and sold the practice.

dentists have gotten hella expensive. My old guy retired and I had to find someone new. A filling from him was a mere $130 and cleaning was just $75. I was able to find a new dentist who charged me $330 for cleaning, 2 xrays and a filling. I walked out like I'd stole something. I was bracing myself for something $500+ based on what I've heard from other people.

Sounds like BS to me. I went Monday. She picked my teeth, flossed, and then did the baking powder spray thing. Not sure what else kind of cleaning they could do?

Dentists don't work hard, I'm sure one will be along shortly while on the job to fill you in. Lol.

I had the same experience and found another dentist. Is this dental practice part of a chain like Aspen Dental, Doctors Dental, etc., and do you have dental insurance? Those type places seem to do a insurance analysis on new patients and you get whatever level of treatment your insurance will pay for.

You just gotta shop around. I agree for the most part some try and charge sky high rates, just gotta shop. Capitalism and all.

My dentist has a $379 cash "insurance" yearly rate that includes all X-rays, 2 full cleanings, etc. and 10% off of any major work needed.

I got normal Xrays and a cleaning Monday for $159 I think it was. The cleaning is $120 alone I believe. SO its under $300 for the cash pay yearly amount without the "insurance".

Which I joke every year with the front desk that the 10% seems absurd because they probably just jack up the rates 10% lol.

i feel like this is a "scam" of sorts. My dental lady (not dentist) mentioned the exact same thing. I have no cavities and go every 6 months. Never had any problems.

Then suddenly, last visit she said my mouth needed a deep clean. I said no thanks.

It sounded fricking awful

ETA: just read the other replies, i'm glad i'm not the only one thinking its a scam

This is a scam if you regularly see a dentist and have some basic hygiene practices. It’s something a lot do to make a quick buck off of you and make you think that other dentists suck

Any “cleaning” is a scam. They amount to being a checkup, which is ok, but expensive for a checkup. It’s like if a mechanic would have you go in once a yr for a $70.00 rack fee to check ur your car.

I haven’t been to the dentist in over 15 years. It’s a scam. Only go if your teeth hurt.

Brush twice a day, floss, and you’ll be fine.

yeah I had it and no insurance does not cover all of it.
Don't know if it is a scam but they make it sound like you really need it. ??

Dentists like to make money and not all are honest.

I know of a dentist in Portland who only works on kids. Anyway she, and the anesthesiologist, make a killing telling parents their kid has to go under for dental work.

Half of them don't need to go under but the dentist hates squirming kids so she just lies to avoid squirming kids.
