Any car mechanics or buffs out there?

A friend has a 2013 Chevy Malibu. The engine was rebuilt or replaced under warranty by the dealer 3 years ago.
Now a mechanic is telling him that the engine is losing power and the same issue (engine rebuild) may be necessary.
Could somebody be tampering with his gas or his engine? He's been dating a woman with a twisted ex husband.

When it comes to auto mechanics and physicians, some are good at diagnosing, some are just parts changers. Get a second opinion.

With any GM product made after 2006 you are going to have a very difficult time with that theory.

There’s no way an engine needs two rebuilds in 7 years unless you are racing it.

What motor is in it?
I had a terrible experience with the GM 2.4L they installed in their small SUV's
Bad sensors, exhaust manifold, blown motor

I would want to know what he thinks the issue is. Losing power is not a cause, it is the result. What is causing the loss of power? If he can't tell you, take it somewhere else.

The only way to be sure is to run a "compression check". This will indicate how much wear you have between your cylinder wall and piston. The compression tester is like 15 bucks at Autozone and it takes about an hour to test your engine if you take your time. If you can change your spark plugs, you can do this.
If the compression is OK and it's not "knocking" the problem isn't a worn out engine.

This.
You should have a factory PSI level as a benchmark. 1 of 3 things happens: all 6 (or 4, if it’s a 4 banger) cylinders are normal; all cylinders are low; or one of them is lower than the others. Usually the 3rd scenario indicates failure.

Possible - Yes.
Likely - Not very.
If your friend had a Toyota or Honda, the likelihood would go up substantially. But, he has a Chevy. Odds are that it's just a Chevy being a Chevy.
Tell your friend to buy a Toyota or Honda next time.

Is the car going into “reduced power mode” or is it just lacking get up and go? If it’s going into reduced power mode, it’s most likely not the engine.

Chevy was making crap vehicles in those years. A buddy of mine that builds 07 and older chevy trucks told me most of the parts in that 2013 era came from China. That car may have a bad head gasket. I wouldn't fix it . I would just trade it in if it runs and drives or park it somewhere and let it get towed off if it doesnt
