I've never had to shoot one but with the amount the kids and dogs play in the water I always wonder how much of a headache I'd get from law enforcement when they inevitably come out for reported gun shots and I explain there was a gator stalking a loved one?
Anybody have experience with this?

Ive had a wild hog charge at me. It's interesting for sure. Luckily, I was hunting and armed.

Over 300 pound sow, twice. One was 4 legged and the other 2 legged. Shot the 4 legged one in the face 4 times. Outran the 2 legged one pretty easily. In cowboy boots at that.

Why would law enforcement do anything?
If you are gonna post it on social media, the yeah you are setting yourself up for that.

Depends where you live.
S Carolina, Florida- they'd probably give you a huge fine or worse.
Most of Louisiana, outside of New Orleans, its probably a non-issue and your neighbors would be grateful.

Kicked the shite out of a pit bull charging me on the street once. Maybe not " large" but probably just as dangerous

People have nuisance licenses that you can call. I know a couple of people that have them. You can call them directly and they can come kill it or trap it, or if you call wildlife and they can’t get anyone out there, they’ll send the nuisance trappers

Are they protected there?

I'll make sure to tell the gator to hold off for a few hours or days while we wait for them to come out.

not a gator but when I was a kid my uncle had to take out a wild boar that was charging us, we'd just come in from deer hunting and he had to put a dog down so we, about 3-4 of us, were taking the dog to his final resting place out in the woods and the hog saw us and came charging

Squirrel hunting with a 20 gauge one time when I was 14. Saw a doe walk over the hill then heard her screaming for her life. I took off over the hill and there was a pack of coyotes tearing into her. I discharged one round toward the crowd. When they dispersed, one dog unknowingly was running right at me. It broke through the brush about 10 feet in front of me and I pumped a round into his chest. Never found the doe, I think I saved her. At 14 I was pretty proud of myself, with soiled pants.

In college one of my roommates had the smart idea to let a stray pit into our house that he found walking home from the bar the night before. When I woke up to let my little boston terrier out the pit immediately attacked. I wrecked that frickin POS...kicked it in the head with boots on as hard as i could, grabbed it by the throat, and then slammed it on its face into the brick sidewalk as hard as i possibly could and it scurried off down the street. I had never felt that kind of rage and adrenaline come over me in my entire life. I still get pissed off thinking about it.

not a predator and didn't take him out until a later date, but:
my grandfather had a cattle farm when I was a kid.
as a teenager I got run slap the frick over by a bull.
wasn't a massive full grown bull (thank god).
we were rounding them up for shots and one hard headed bull decided he wasn't going the direction we wanted him to.
he started running pretty much right at me, so I did what I'd done plenty times before. Squared up like I was a linebacker plugging a hole.
Only unlike literally every other time, this one didn't turn and run another direction.
l lower my shoulder at last minute to brace for impact.
bull's head hit me under the chin and then the upper chest/shoulder area.
needless to say I went backwards and got stepped on a couple times.
I think my dad, uncles and cousins who all witnessed it pissed themselves laughing at me for even trying.
needless to say, that bastard made for some really tasty steaks.

I got charged by a wild hog when I was about 10 or 11 out squirrel hunting with my dad. We had walked into a hardwood stand at the bottom of a holler and we were standing around looking up in the trees for probably 20 minutes or so and decided to move on because we hadn't seen any movement.
So, as we started to walk and were going to go over the ridge across from the ridge we had walked in from and about two steps into our move, I saw a black blur out of the corner of my eye and looked over to see a big arse boar charging down the hill we were about to go up and over. I had my Ruger 10/22 and had already shot a few squirrels earlier and had 5 shots left. Since I was an incredibly nervous 10 year old in the middle of an adrenaline dump, I didn't hit the thing once. (Probably wouldn't have made a difference if I'd with a .22 vs a 300lb hog).
Luckily my dad was able to keep calm and put three 10mm rounds into the pig and he ended up dropping about 10 feet from me. It was funny because my dad let out a scream that I can only describe as "feminine" before putting the beast down. We both laughed our asses off for about 5 minutes and then gutted it and dragged it back to the truck. Not the craziest story ever, but I'll never forget the way I felt. It was my first true "fight or flight" response to adrenaline surging through my body and it was a crazy feeling.
