Why? Is the ship gonna blow up?

Ships don’t normally ram into the dock. Might it start accelerating and do more damage and send chunks of material flying your way? Might it compromise the structural integrity of the dock?

Admittedly, I don’t know much about this kind of thing, and I doubt any of those onlookers do either, so it seems wise not to stand around and get a hands-on lesson.

Maybe not narrowly averted.

One fiew shows four people falling off the smaller boat into the space (or what was soon to have been the space) between that ship and the dock.

Probably no longer distinguishable from poo.

Could he have used to bow thruster to gain some steering or was it disabled also?

Bow thruster is useless over 3 knots and that thing has way too much momentum for a thruster to do anything

Odds are the ship had z-drives anyway

Remember the guy that wanted to rent a party barge for a bachelor party last week?

Any tips for good boating and how to not be annoying/an a-hole on the water to other boaters?

Any tips for a first time boater?

Said something about engine failure.
If you think about it, cruise ship engines are almost always running. And the ship is moving. A typical 7 day cruise, or 168 hours, the ship is only docked about 4 times, 10 hours or so at each port. So, it's moving 75% of the time, always fully powered.

Most cruise ships now are diesel-electric and use diesel generators to power electric motors for propulsion and general power. They have several generators and only put them on line as they need to. May be one or more down when sitting at the dock or just cruising to having them all running when docking.

All those people just standing on the dock have some guts. I would be running full speed away from that ship.

Guts? Those people are morons for standing there.
