I commented in a thread a few weeks ago about the announcement that they were closing the local brewery because "it wasn't big enough to handle their needs" according to their statement. I called BS and said there had to be more to it. Well, well, well how the turntables...

quote:

But by July, Sekmakas had bad news. Nobody would work the night production shift, he told the board. Would-be hires were too worried about security.

"He told us, 'There is no dollar amount we could pay employees to show up at midnight and leave early the next morning. It's not going to happen,'" said a board member who wasn't authorized to be quoted by name.

Bills and taxes

A lack of overnight workers was one of several issues in recent months that led to Faubourg's surprise announcement that it was scrapping plans to expand the facility into a regional beer production powerhouse, according to interviews with company executives, board members, public officials and civic leaders.

As well as the hiring trouble, Faubourg was struggling to cope with a series of power outages, big water charges from the Sewerage & Water Board and a half-million-dollar tax bill.

Despite their flowery Press Release, we all knew it was good ole NOLA that brought the place down.

This has been a failure since Day 1 when they purchased a beer that offered nothing but iconic local brand, and then changed the brand.

I don’t know many people who are willing to work in New Orleans East at night. I’m certainly not.

The place has lasted longer than I thought it would. There’s a bunch of places with better beer and better atmospheres in much safer areas of the city. Combine that with a name change that pissed off the only people who actually drink it and this was doomed.

How close was the modern recipe to the Dixie recipe?

I’m guessing not at all

Maybe one day people will finally recognize the real underlying issues in this country so maybe we can start addressing them.

Dixie Beer had one thing going for them, name/nostalgia.

And when they got rid of it, they signed their death warrant.

They should just pump their own water from the Industrial canal, wouldn't taste any different.

The entire brewing industry is a bloodbath right now. Places closing left and right.

I can't remember the last time I bought a six pack, if ever, but I would occasionally get one at a bar or a poboy joint for similar reasons, just cause it felt "right" sometimes to do so.

The whole name and label change killed any reason to ever even think about doing so.

The entire goofy deal was a giant leap beyond simply 'go woke, go broke.' I couldn't imagine a more boneheaded move on a business level, if I tried.

So it didn't really have anything to do with "going woke"?

They should move it to Houston, keep all the NOLA rah-rah bullshite they tack on, then just keep selling it here like nothing changed.

Definitely not. Nola East has some decent neighborhoods, but for the most part, it is a lawless cesspool.

Obviously the name "Dixie" invoked fear in the local hoodlums and kept the former workers safe.

Much like the city has only gotten worse since the statues came down, as I foretold.
