IMO, she's actually a beautiful woman who was born into an era where the cosmetics industry still had a ways to go. My hair would probably look like that if I had been born then...as hard as that is to admit!

For the record, the beauty pageants back then didn't have a 'talent' component. Evaluations were made just on straight-up, no-nonsense physical attractiveness. That's what I like about that older era. They weren't yet culturally bedeviled by embarrassment over the innate superficiality of these shows, and compelled to expand them into areas that catered to their own pretentiousness. Didn't have that silly guff in 1924.
