re: Americans say there’s not much appeal to big-city living. Why do so many of us live there?

I don't really want to live in the country either because I don't care to maintain of a bunch of land. I grew up doing that.

Ideally, I'd live on the outskirts of some smaller city (80k or so) like Greenville, SC or Asheville.

I have no desire to live in some major metro.

I live 5 minutes from work in a city

If I didn’t work in the city I’d live an hour away in the country

Hey bruh. Just wanted to let you know that at one point my parents had a house in the FQ. As long as we’re speaking of little known facts on the OT.

The Greenville, SC metro area has a population of around 900,000.

The Asheville, NC metro area is at around 400,000.

If I could live in the small towns in between these two cities...a place like Brevard...I'd enjoy that.

imagine wanting to live in a suburb

I love rural living. I love small town living.

I would probably enjoy living in a busy city center if the area was safe with a bunch of good restaurants and bars within walking distance.

No way, no way in hell, could i live in cookie cutter suburban America full of HOAs, a-hole cops, limited nightlife due to all the do-gooders that live in suburbia, and shitty chain restaurants

Louisiana has a pretty limited list of decent small towns. Most small towns are filled with people who can’t leave and a handful of people who enjoy ruling over the rubble.

The Midwest still has great small towns, especially when you get out of corn country and get up north in the woods.

I'd venture to guess a place with 1300 square feet in an average to below average neighborhood that needed to be completely gutted would still run $600k minimum.

Doesn't take a hell of a lot there...

Give me an acre and a 2000-2500 sqft home in a subdivision as opposed to having no yard and a 300k 1300 sqft house in a city.

There is nothing enjoyable about living in a DSLD house in a neighborhood of 100 other houses that look exactly alike.

I don’t see the point of a one acre lot at all

It’s not like you’re secluded, and now you have to mow and take care of a lawn

I can get what I want whenever I want, I like having access to events and places, yet having privacy and isolation in a major city.

My SIL and her fiance just bought a place in the Heights this month and it's beautiful. Around the same price range and square footage. For being in such a desirable location I'm surprised how affordable the Heights is.

Heights is in the inner loop, correct? 1300sf for that seems like a steal. That’s how much 1300sf gets you in Metairie.
