Americans say there’s not much appeal to big-city living. Why do so many of us live there?

Roughly 80 percent of Americans live in urban areas, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But new data from Gallup suggests many of them aren’t doing so by choice. Asked what kind of community they’d live in if they could move anywhere they wished, Americans overall said their No. 1 choice would be in a rural area.

So why do they stay put? Quite simply, big metro areas tend to be where the jobs and opportunities are. “Many Americans are constrained by financial, family and other factors that make moving to a different type of place difficult, if not impossible,” Newport writes. Labor markets work as a positive feedback loop: Job opportunities attract talented employees, and talented employees attract firms looking to hire

At the extreme end of this cycle you end up with superstar firms and cities gobbling up an ever larger share of the economic pie. Just look to the recent announcement of Amazon’s new operations in Washington, D.C., and New York, two cities already awash in talent and prosperity. (Jeffrey P. Bezos, the founder of Amazon, also owns The Washington Post.

Sad that Americans have such little drive to follow their dreams.

I would venture to guess that proximity to a well paying job which could lead them to reaching their goal of living elsewhere would be the leading reason

I don't know, I think a LOT of big city dwellers like the idea of living in a more rural setting. Not sure they all would actually enjoy living in a more rural setting.

I know for me it would take a really special small, rural town for me to enjoy living there.

Jobs

Also as others said, they want to live in a small town like aspen or any other niche vacation town, not Napoleonville, LA

For 80% of current Americans....
Do you have the internet in said location?
Yes?
Not much different than living anywhere else.

The potential lack of high-speed internet is enough to make living in a rural area impossible for most of us.

I’ve done both(big city and rural) and love both. Anyone who says there aren’t benefits to both is in denial.

For real. I live in the suburbs now and the schools are about the only redeeming quality. We're gone once our youngest finishes high school.

Honest question, what’s so terrible about living in the suburbs? It’s not just you, people shite on them all the time. What’s so terrible about them?

It's where the jobs are?

I have no desire to live in the suburbs, but I'm at a particular point in my life where the suburbs don't offer much for me. I don't have kids so I don't need a big house, work long hours in the downtown area of a city so a short commute is ideal for me, and I enjoy being able to quickly get to bars/restaurants at nights and on the weekends.

I completely get why the suburbs are ideal for others, and perhaps one day I'll be at that point in my life. But that's just not where I am currently.

It must be the good schools and low crime.

The only appeal of living in a rural area is if you can have 10 plus acres and some animals and a pond, other than that absolutely no reason not to live in a city. I don't get the point of suburbs, especially in Louisiana. The only pro is "BETTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!" but with the rise of magnet/charter schools that is negated (assuming your kid isn't a dumbass and can get in).

generally all the negatives of both rural and urban combined

longer commute and less things to do of a rural setting, with the traffic, less space, and people of urban settings

I get why people live in suburbs, I just can't imagine why anyone would say that is where they want to live with all things otherwise equal

it’s not about what makes them terrible. It’s about the lack of things that make them good
