re: American Heart Asso sends rep to oppose Texas bill to eliminate junk food from SNAP

The only drawback is every recipient will now have two carts at the checkout, one to ring up as SNAP eligible and one to ring up and pay cash for. Lines at the grocery store are going to absolutely suck.

I may not care for these programs but they benefit companies who employ people and farmers who supply the food. It’s all a big chain that keeps things flowing.
Cutting out programs don’t just stymie those receiving benefits but hurt the economy and producers when we look at the big picture.
Cutting out aid to other countries hurts producers, especially farmers, as well.
Farmers have been taking a big hit lately due to losing their labor and no this.

Subsidizing everyone with my tax dollars has hurt me, so apologies if I'm a tad callous.

The logic being that if junk food is not allowed by SNAP, the people eligible would rather just go hungry than chance eating healthier foods?
I will get downvoted a ton but there really is an argument that for many healthier foods are difficult to find. Not just urban areas but I have been to rural Tennessee and Florida where the only store within a 20 minute drive is a family dollar and there is no public transportation. I am all for restriction but some effort has to be made to increase better options.
Of course there are a ton who are just fat and lazy and dont give a shite.

The dollar generals by me have small sections of fresh produce now and they have always carried canned and frozen vegetables. There is zero reason for SNAP to cover candy and soda.

I am sure you will get DV for this, but that is a valid point. How many times have you been on a road trip and the only "grocery store" you pass for miles is a family dollar. But just because the FD is the most convenient grocer does not mean you should be loading up on sodas, candy, chips... They still sell those boxed/frozen meals that are not the healthiest, but would be better than a lot of the shite I see in people's grocery carts

When a “news” story makes no sense whatsoever, I find that we typically are not getting the whole story. I’ll almost garantee that is the case here.

THe AHA is nothing more than an activist group if true

“For a bill like this, we would need to be careful that it does not impact overall participation in the SNAP program and that there be adequate education to the public on healthy habits

American Heart Association is worthless
It seems like this is the case for pretty much every major association that claims to speak for their members these days... ABA for lawyers, AMA for doctors, etc.

many rural areas are just as much of a drain on taxpayers, at least per capita, as inner-city ghettos. poor people should not be living in rural areas.

Oh I feel the same way. But searched for 20-30min and only found people/news saying basically what the article I linked said. And the video of the Karen lady politician in disbelief over what the AHA had to say was actual footage of the hearing.
The AHA did put out a statement saying the message was "miscommunicated". As far as I know they didn't clarify what the miscommunication was.

Reminds of a couple years ago when I was at a dollar general. The "lady" in front of me grabbed a fistfull of laffytaffy bars from the counter selection and proceeded to pay with EBT. That was all that was on her shopping list apparently. Like $13 of taxpayer money. This was about 3 miles from an actual grocery store.

Where the frick has everyone been for the last 100 years?
Its always about money, always. Always.

I agree and the people who actually care about their health are doing this with soda and snacks being supplement. We know all of this is aimed at the people you see at the grocery store with a cart full of garbage and another cart full of crab legs, steak seafood etc.
I get being upset about it but it's funny we get mad when food stamps are just used to buy crap and then get equally as mad when they are used to buy steak and seafood.
