I said East Coast, near a major university cluster, a large tech and start up community, a major international airport, taxes weren't as big of an issue as one might think, and not New York.
That's about as specific as one can be without actually naming it. Only one other city even somewhat closely matches that (DC), and they aren't getting it for a lot of reasons, and they don't have a robust start up and VC community.
Shoot, I was pumping Cincinnati for various reasons until my Amazon friends told me Boston was the choice.

I mean Boston is obviously one of the most logical options, but like choosing the Patriots to win the Super Bowl is a good bet, that doesn't mean it's decided.

Who knows - it could be a guerilla campaign by senior Amazon people to push Bezos in that direction.

But I'm going to be honest, while I don't doubt whether your truthfulness, I do wonder how in the know you friend truly is. I'm sure Boston is an option being floated around, but I'm guessing very few really are in the know.

Boston is easily the best choice for a headquarters, despite the fact that Logan is crappy.
If any other area stands a chance, it's the DC area. Bezos bought a $23 million house there this year.

Eh, I get where they were getting at. Tons of tech companies in the Denver metro area.
I hadn't been to Boston but it's not like they don't have tech sector there. It makes sense for them to be there with a presence on the east coast and with the talent pool they can draw from.
Keep in mind, Amazon is not just a retail company, they also run the largest cloud services provider in the world with Amazon Web Services. I think people miss the point when they think of Amazon strictly as retail and not with their presence in technology services.

It's probably going to be Boston.
Money isn't a concern to them. This isn't an insurance company pinching pennies that sets up shop in Plano or Alpharetta because it's cheap. This is a tech company run by tech executives, they're rolling in cash like Scrooge McDuck, they think of themselves as Gods, and they want an east coast location set among the most elite university cluster in America, in a city with a roaring tech scene, that can recruit from and be a stepping stone to Europe. They also want a city that's culturally similar to Seattle. All of that screams Boston. The relative payroll and corporate tax cost to them is immaterial. They have more than they can spend and they're extremely cocky. Again, worrying about stuff like that IS how you properly run an insurance company, but it's NOT how Amazon is run. For the time being anyway, they're operating in a whole other realm.
