In such cases, eBay collects and remits Internet Sales Tax on your behalf.

Big Tech absolutely LOVES this.

You're pretty much dependent on them to handle that for you. It's an administrative nightmare for a small business. But Amazon, eBay, Shopify, etc can do it automatically.

I would venture to say not many since online transactions are easy to track.

Start an LLC with a tax ID.

Yes it’s legalized theft, especially on used items that have already had taxes paid on them(eBay)

EBay is collecting for Louisiana, whether required to or not.

I do not believe this is correct.

As a seller you are given an option to collect sales tax. Louisiana does not require eBay itself to collect the tax.

It may appear as eBay is collecting the tax though.

The incentive for Amazon to collect taxes in Alabama is that they they can charge the full 10% sales tax (or whatever your local rate is), then Alabama says that as long as Amazon will turn the tax in on time, the state will give them a 2% rebate.
So, basically Amazon makes 2% profit on every sale, just by charging you sales tax

On eBay you classify as new or used. Used would most likely be exempt. Mistake on eBay's part if it has tax.

I bought something marked used on there that had tax on it. Hell, I bought something used from an individual in Russia they put tax on.

An an example, I just clicked on a very old used computer. $69.99 to buy it now.

$6.26 in applicable taxes added to final price.

That is horse shite.

Here is the endgame. A cashless society. Imagine all the money (physical cash) changing hands every day at a flea market, roadside stand or yard sale. No taxes are being paid. The “state” wants their cut. When all transactions are electronic, bam, the man get his piece of the pie. All you are left with is bartering, which can be time consuming and cumbersome.

That’s not right. The local government(s) have no right to this money. Double taxation on used items. No way eBay is sending that on behalf of seller, because the law does not require them to. Where is this money going?

I sell on eBay and the tax is collected by ebay. We don't get any of it and we have to pay extra tax on income made from the sales. Talk about the government double dipping on our money!!!

Not really. I just hand over my paperwork to my CPA and write a check to the government.

If you buy a used car from a dealer, you pay sales tax on it.

If you buy a used golf club from a pro shop, you pay sales tax on it.

If you buy used clothes from a thrift store, you pay sales tax on them.

If you buy a used gun from a dealer, you pay sales tax on it.

Not on eBay. No taxes for items I have purchased were ever collected on eBay. This has been a recent development.

For several years now, it has been eBay policy for sellers to charge and collect sales tax only if the buyer/shipping address is in the same state as the seller.

I haven't sold there in a while, so I don't know if it is on all sales now.

Where is the sale considered to happen? Buyer’s location or seller’s?

I hate taxes in general, but if a brick and mortar retailer has to collect them, so to should online marketplaces. Even shitty things like taxes should be applied evenly.
